Giraffes Grazing

7x10 mixed watermedia collage on Canson mixed media paper. Drawn with an orange Magic colored pencil, then a fast underpainting with transparent pyrrol orange/quinacridone gold watercolors was done.  When dry, I added brown and quin burnt orange patterns with some green, then the bg foliage.  After that dried I used brown torn tissue paper that had small squares and a giftwrap paper featuring colored circles, adhered with matte medium.  Lastly, I used a blue Magic pencil to make calligraphy marks in bg trees and bushes.

Zebras

9x12 watercolor and inks on paper done in 2014 as an assignment homework for Sketchbook Skool. Encouragement was given to visit a zoo or natural history museum to render animals from life.  If you had no such around you were to use toy figurines, a practice I've been doing for many years.  I had a mare and baby zebra so used those with the poses you see here.  At the end watercolor was splattered and washed at random, then letter stamps used to spell out zebra.

Charming Chair

22x15 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Saunders done several years ago from my front studio porch photo. Roman Statue

8.5x11 black Tombow brush pen on Crescent sketchbook done several days ago as a part of WetCanvas contest.  I did crop the statue's body to focus on the head.  The paper was too wet hence the splotchy ink on the right side.  These ancient marble statues are something to see.

Mask-erade

20x26 poured watercolor onto dry Saunders 140 lb cold press paper. This is an older mixed media abstract work taken back to the easel.  I put torn masking tape over it first and long strips at random. With no preconceived ideas I laid torn paper doily placemat pieces then spray painted those. After all dried, removed tape and confetti came to mind, then portions of playing cards painted using real ones for reference. I put 5 and a 3 for the year I was hatched, and a King of Hearts the K for my initial. The 2 of Hearts upper right means the 2 that can go with the 3 card for 23rd, my birthday date. Lastly I used real feathers to paint negatively red, green, yellow, blue feathers around eye holes then developed eye masks in the lower part, two obvious masks and there's a third one hidden.  See if you can spot it.  The whole thing is a  Mardi Gras mess and was it was fun to do a  fairly abstract piece.  The playing cards are actual size.

Key Lime Slice

8.5x5.5 watercolor and ink on Masters sketchbook page done today as part of an ongoing love affair I have with limes.  Pie or cheesecake featuring the small green citrus fruit is nice as is a slice on the salty edge of a margarita or a swirl (sangria + frozen margarita), and even iced tea.  Micron 01 pen used to do initial sketch.

Bougainvillea Vines

5x13 fuchsia pink and pale orange-pink alcohol ink bougainvillea leaves, inspired today by one I bought at Johansen's nursery.  All the leaves including the colored tips are soft and thin and the inks did a nice job as far as texture goes.  I used Senorita Magenta, Flamingo, and Lettuce colors and a wooden chopstick to lay in the green vines and leaves.  This was done on white freezer paper on the shiny side.

15x22 work is actually two identically painted scenes of pink roses in front of a house. The original was ho-hum boring so a few years late...
