Flight Delay

11x15 watercolor still life on Arches 140 lb cold press paper done at beginning of the month using Daniel Smith paints. I set up various personal items from home then used a strong lamp for shadows. The small birds on the pink scarf draped over the top served as the theme while the realistic parakeet kept all others in line below. Studying still life arrangements, placements, shadows, and other design elements was my students' assignment this month. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Hummer and Poppies

5.5x7.5 watercolor using White Nights paints done week before last while on our trip to New Mexico; this hummingbird is featured with poppies which was a crop from a sold painting. Poppy Path

8x8 watercolor; I used a limited palette of aureolin, ultramarine, and permanent rose paints on 140 lb cold press paper by Master's Touch. First I did a wet in wet underpainting using the 3 colors. When dry, pencil sketched them in then went with what I felt like rather than using local color. Lastly, different color splatters were added to dry painting. Ref courtesy of artist Christine. More Pompous Poppies

15x11 watercolor on Saunders Waterford 140 lb cold press paper, a demo done for my Monday afternoon art class. In this imaginary garden scene of poppies, I demonstrated negative versus positive shapes, warms against cools, contrasts and complementary colors along with balance, repetition, unity, etc. design principles. Gardener's Bike

9x6.5 watercolor, a daily painting, of an old garden shed and the worker's bike and basket.  Photo ref courtesy WetCanvas/Susan.  I edited lots of the photo out such as foreground, middle ground, items on the bike and clutter around the shed's entrance, and top right I added blue sky.  In the foreground I added multicolored poppies.

Poppy Cats

15x22 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper, a painting using my fractured image style where various rectangles are marked on top of a pencil drawing.  Then each section is painted differently but the whole composition jives in the end.  These three cats belong to the owner who commissioned this unique pet portrait.  Flowers were also to be included so I chose poppies that would set off the neutral colors of the kitties.  This work is SOLD.

Poppy Bubbles

5x6 alcohol inks/Micron 01 pen on Yupo synthetic paper, today's demo for Midland TX Palette Club. I was showing the class how to do an abstract background then small details within using a permanent ink pen.

Poppies and Clouds

4x6 alcohol inks on professional photo paper done today on the back of a failed one.  Turning it over I decided to use the blue grey color that seeped onto the back as clouds, and add Senorita Magenta ink drops to make poppy shapes.  Green lines were all made by putting an ink drop onto the tip of a chopstick then using it to draw, even laying it on its side and rolling it.  Spots of alcohol 91% were added here and there to encourage blending and dilution.
