Percolator

8.5x5.5 watercolor and ink (Pigma Micron 01 pen) on Masters sketchbook paper done previously. Getting perked up to start the fall time change. Not a problem here as long as there is caffeine brewing. Love my stainless steel percolator going at it and the smell of fresh coffee. COPYRIGHT 2026 Kay Smith

Countertop Bell Peppers

8x5.5 watercolor and ink in old junk journal done recently as part of my host for WetCanvas weekend drawing event challenge. The colorful bell peppers were too enticing to pass up. I used Winsor Newton 0.3 sepia fine liner pen. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Sliced Bell Pepper

8.25x9 mixed media in sketchbook done last month for an online painting exercise I hosted. The sliced bell pepper was too interesting to not take a photo of it for artists to use. Sketched with Micron 01 pen, I followed with watercolor then Montana acrylic markers. COPYRIGHT 2025 Kay Smith

Window Daisies

6x6 watercolor on Grumbacher 140 lb cold press paper done over this past weekend as part of another WetCanvas drawing event. With this furnished ref photo I've cropped the rest of the window and kitchen out to focus more on the vase of fresh daisies. COPYRIGHT 2023 Kay Smith

Summer Peaches

15x11 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper.  I love the blue and white kitchen towel, the white tall bowl and the sunny imaginary foliage outside the window.  Shadows and reflections of each shape cause bounce light to occur thus creating color nuances most people don't see.

White Coffee Cup

3.75x5.25 watercolor on Italia Magnani 140 lb cold press paper just done using new White Nights paints. Today I was experimenting with values to see how well the pigments performed using mixed neutrals.

Handsome Chef

8.5x5.5 watercolor and ink line on paper done last week.  The real chef I sketched this from was much more rotund so I have skinnied him up quite a bit.

Coffee Grinder & Pear

7x5.5 watercolor over ink line with Micron 0.3 pen completed today.  The ink sketch was done yesterday for #InkTober2019 for the prompt word 'ancient' which the coffee grinder certainly is.  The red pear adds a nice modern day kitchen touch to this simple still life.

Blackhat Chef

5.5x8.5 watercolor and ink (Micron 01 pen) on Masters sketchbook drawn over the weekend then color added today.  This ref, courtesy Jess/WetCanvas, was one of the 16 featured on the current weekend drawing event on that site.  The photo had another chef with this guy so he was omitted to focus on this happy fellow.  Background color was a mix of palette mud neutral tones.

Fruit Plate

22x15 watercolor on hot press 140 lb paper that I first coated with white gouache, then painted.  This gives a nice softness to the colors in the fruit still life of pears, strawberries and blueberry muffins on antique china plates.  Before the pear paint dried, I color-sanded colored pencil into it using fine grit sandpaper.

Tyler Rooster

17.5x13 watercolor on gessoed matboard finished today.  Drawn with charcoal pencil from a taxidermist model I found in a Tyler, TX antique store in 2009, am just getting around to painting it.  Largely brown and burnt sienna feathers covered the fellow's body.  I photographed him as he was perched on a tall furniture piece so this angle was interesting as he looks quizzical.

Figs

5.5x8.5 watercolor on paper done last weekend, a group of fig fruit on a small platter dish.  I used Bienfang sketchbook for mixed media; these figs were drawn in colored pencil first.  A simple subject that does not have much color or pizzazz but a fun and cute one.

Beets Me!

5.5x8 watercolor and ink on Strathmore Visual Journal for mixed media.  Over the weekend I drew these beets with black Uniball pen then added paint.  I detest beets but thought if I tried to make this root vegetable attractive then might just eat the jar of freshly canned ones my sister-in-law gave us...may taste better than commercially available beets.  They're very nutritious, too.
