Retro Rooster collage

10 x 14.75 mixed media (watercolor, acrylics, newspaper, napkins, catalog pages, ink) I composed over a failed geranium watercolor. The rooster head and neck were from a former failed barnyard painting with him and 2 hens that did not quite work. The hens I cut out also and adhered to an old shack scene called "Chicken Ranch", that should still be on this blog. His purple legs just kill me; feathers in front are from newspaper photos of old wood. It is a conglomeration of elements with a whole lot of country style and was fun to make. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith

Three Chickens

7x9 watercolor using White Nights paints on Masters Touch 80 lb sketchbook paper done over the past weekend. Hay Barn and Silos

15x22 watercolor imaginary farm scene on Saunders 140 lb paper, painted wet in wet.  From the chickens pecking in the foreground to hay stacked inside and the blue skies above this painting brings back many memories of farm life and the hard work that goes with it.

Tyler Rooster

17.5x13 watercolor on gessoed matboard finished today.  Drawn with charcoal pencil from a taxidermist model I found in a Tyler, TX antique store in 2009, am just getting around to painting it.  Largely brown and burnt sienna feathers covered the fellow's body.  I photographed him as he was perched on a tall furniture piece so this angle was interesting as he looks quizzical.

Palette Knife Roosters

12x12 oil on  gessobord completed today from Leslie Saeta's online tutorial.  I used watersoluble Winsor Newton paints and two palette knives to follow along her video instruction and photo.  There are many subjects to choose from on her website and for $35 you have access to the information to use when and how you wish.  I had most of the supplies and really enjoyed this opportunity to work in oils again.

Chicken a la King

22x15 watercolor of chickens on the farm pecking around the hay bales below the quintessential red barn.  Just as the rooster crowed to welcome a new sunny day, we welcome a brand new year.  Happy New Year to all my followers, friends, and fellow artists!

Mollie's Chickens

5.25x7.5 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper done this afternoon.  These are Mollie Jones' poultry and she has them in all shapes, sizes, colors, breeds, etc. on her farm in East Texas.  After yesterday's mixed media collage intense concentration I felt like painting these barnyard babes.

Mad as a Wet Hen

15x22 watercolor and ink on 140 lb cold press paper, drawn using several photos then painted wet in wet.  After it dried I went back in with black India ink for minimal line work and loaded watercolor onto a brush for splatters of paint.

Fowl Language - Finished Work

Three fine fowl engage in their own language here on the farm, clucking or crowing, they await their next meal. The rooster is on the lookout for any trouble and protecting his hen harem.

Hippy Chicks

22x30 watermedia (acrylic, watercolor, latex acrylic) on Italia 140 lb cold press paper. These two hip chicks are doing the funky chicken dance. Background design is taken from butterfly wing sections for added pattern and whimsical interest.

Mad as a Wet Hen

15x22 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper, painted quickly then partially outlined using black India ink. I splattered paint when dry. Painting barnyard creatures, especially chickens, is too much fun. Growing up on a farm, one of my chores was to gather and wash eggs in Pine Sol. To this day I hate the smell of that disinfectant.

Chicken Ranch - watercolor collage

15x22 Arches, chickens are wc collage cut from one failed painting on top of really bad old wooden shacks painting to make a new view. It is meant to be a humorous piece from two 'dogs'. Moral of the story: Never throw away a bad painting. You can always recycle it! This painting will be part of a traveling exhibit to the Hill Country galleries in a few months.
