Holstein Barn

11.75x8.25 watercolor on Fabriano 140 lb cold press rough paper, done over the last weekend as part of another online challenge with WetCanvas. We had two hours to choose and render an image so the cows spoke to me in their corner of the barn. COPYRIGHT 2023 Kay Smith

Backcountry Barn

12x9 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper, an imaginary country scene of a rundown old barn. The rocky landscape foreground was fun to paint wet in wet in layers as was the middle ground. The fence is still up so suppose someone is running cattle. Storm clouds are building up overhead. When dry, splattering was done for textural effects. COPYRIGHT 2020 Kay Smith.

Harvest Hay Wagon

15x22 watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press paper, painted wet in wet from a photo taken in Midland at Alldredge Gardens. Trying to be loose and a bit abstract, I put in fresh hot colors on the cool wet paper, let blend, then finished the haystalks around the fat pumpkins. COPYRIGHT 2020 Kay Smith

Harvest Wagon

5x7 ink on Bristol board using a black Tombow brush pen and water for a 3 value sketch showing a wagon, pumpkins, and hay scene from one of my harvest photos. This value sketch to be used to create a watercolor. Since tomorrow is the first day of fall/autumn I thought it appropriate. This is matted with an 8x10 black mat. COPYRIGHT 2020 Kay Smith

Southwest Still Life

5.5x8.5 watercolor and ink line done last month for a western online challenge.  In this simple still life, a western hat sits atop a pile of hay in the old barn and a rope keeps them company.

Painted Calf

7x4 watercolor done this past weekend for a WetCanvas event.  Paper I used was a backing sheet portion put under smaller works, hence the drips and dabs marks.  The markings on this little Holstein fellow were too attractive to pass up.

Pumpkin Wagon

12x9 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper begun over the weekend and finished today.  After seeing so many of these fall displays while traveling it was fun to paint a collection of gourds and pumpkins ready for autumn's cooler temps and sunny days.

Halloween Harvest Wagon

Harvest Crows

This watercolor is 1/4 sheet, which in our lingo is one fourth of a full sheet measuring 22x30 inches. I drew this scene while in the New Mexico mountains on Friday. Lots of harvest ideas and decorations are out in town now and painting crows is total fun. Nobody likes them. They are black, though, and add a nice punch to the imaginary scene and pumpkin field...or I could've added black cats but that would be too Hallowe'en-ish.
