Chickadee at the Feeder redone
11.5x7.5 mixed media on paper, a redone or reworked piece that had a too busy background. Here I have added white latex paint to the background of the chickadee bird painting, using a brayer and more water to move the paint over most of it. Focus should be on the bird and not on all the extraneous.
This was done last week of January and includes collaged items.

Chickadee at the Feeder
11.5x7.5 mixed media collage on wc paper done week before last. Ref courtesy Cindy on WetCanvas for a challenge this month. I first painted the chickadee as 4x3 miniature but chopped its tail which necessitated putting it into a larger format. Materials included newsprint, watercolor, acrylics, Montana markers, Micron 03 ink pen, Winsor Newton grey fine liner pen, various collage, and a black Sharpie marker. Love this bohemian looking bird art.

Chilly Chickadee
4x3 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Grumbacher paper painted last month that has been gifted (not available). I used a marked up paper used to put small works on to catch drips. These marks were ignored as pencil sketch completed then painted for a unique effect.

Cheery Blackcapped Chickadees
7x9 mixed media on Masters Touch 80 lb paper done last weekend, an imaginary bird painting featuring three blackcapped chickadees amongst snowy icy branches. I first at random brushed matte medium on the page, let it dry, then pencil sketched in the watercolor birds. White gouache was used to splatter over the cerulean and ultramarine blue background, and also to enhance the snow and ice clumps on the pine branches.

Dried Sunflower with Chickadee
6x6 watercolor over pencil sketch on Masters Touch 80 lb paper of a solitary chickadee eating sunflower seeds. In this imaginary autumn countryside, the bird is alone surrounded by dead or dying sunflowers which provide its sustenance.

Summer Sunflower Chickadee
4x6 watercolor on 140 lb Canson cold press paper done last week. I first did an underpainting using the three primaries. When dry, the drawing/sketch was done over the painted area and then developed. This miniature is based on two other chickadees and sunflowers already painted and sold.

Two Cats and a Chickadee
9x12 watercolor on Grumbacher 140 lb cold press paper done over the weekend using three of my sketches from previously done artwork. I decided to use the two cats together with the chickadee above on a sunflower as if they are watching the bird.

Sweet Petite Chickadee in Junk Journal
8.25x5.25 mixed media/collage on vintage book page in junk journal. Sketched in hard charcoal pencil, the chickadee is sweet and petite as the pickle label suggests. I used watercolor, gouache, and white gel pen to finish this one done last week. For some of the vertical lines I painted gouache on the edge of cardboard and stamped it onto the paper.

Chickadee Eating Sunflower Seeds
5.25x8.25 ink sketch in my junk journal using STA Lictin 05 pen on an old page sprayed with Tim Holtz antique stain. I used the brush pen of STA Lictin to get the blackest areas of the sketch done.
This is another in my chickadee series.

Chickadee Season
9x12 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper completed this afternoon. I've used the same bird sketch from a few days ago and flipped it, then its coloring to that of a black-capped chickadee. We see plenty of them when in New Mexico and this fellow is perched on some type of plant I can't identify. Autumn leaves in orange, rust and red complete the natural wildlife. Splatters added when dry.

Peekaboo Bird in Brusho
12x9 watercolor Brusho completed yesterday; sketched in pencil on a sheet of Canson put behind larger work you can see the chickadee peeping out. Featured on current weekend drawing event on WetCanvas, the refs provided by Bonnie, the host, showed a fake bird in a nursery garden. I had turned it horizontally in a landscape format but like it better vertical/portrait. I used blue and black Brusho crystals on dry paper to start. The pink lilac was already on the paper as was the turquoise blue Brusho area.

Chickadee in a Christmas Tree
10.25x9 watercolor done today. It is my version of a little chickadee removed from his post he was perched on in the WetCanvas reference, and placed in a loose, splashy tree. No brush was used, just spritzed paper with water and added several greens, then sprayed sap green in a mister, splattered white gouache, let dry, then with a no. 1 rigger brush, put the darks in his head and wings by negative painting.

Chickadee Valentine
6.25x6.5 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Daler Rowney Langton Prestige paper, done late yesterday just in time for Valentine's Day tomorrow. Beginning with a loose limited palette background I spritzed water then pale yellow arylide, adding touches of blue and alizarin crimson. Colored pencils were sanded into wet areas. When dry, I drew with my brush the chickadee, and lastly stenciled using heart paper doilies and alizarin crimson for patterning. Have a super Valentine's Day! Love the one you're with! XOXOXOXO!
