Emerging Poppies

9x6 ink using black Tombow brush pen on Master's Touch Bristol 103 lb, done second week of this month, a quick demo for class. Using no pencil, darkest darks were put in first followed by a rigger brush of water for mid-tones. Whites remain the white of the paper in this free forming floral of poppies. Purple Poppy Cup

8.5x5.5 watercolor using White Nights paints on sketchbook page done first of this month. I combined several of my poppy photos and placed them as if growing into an imaginary purple pink coffee cup or tea cup. Master's Touch 80 lb paper is the support used in this cheerful floral still life. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Praying Poppy Bloom

12x9 watercolor on Bristol (by Fabriano) paper done last of June. When this was photographed I thought it looked as if it was praying with its head bowed down, hence the title. This poppy bloom was also a demo design for the local watercolor class to try and paint, and they did well. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

March Poppies

8x8 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper (Master's Touch) done March 2 as part of my demo paintings for the Brownfield Art Association. Beginning with the darkest dark first the poppy was quickly developed with the background put in last. Taken from one of my earlier poppy paintings, this imaginary floral took on energy and life as it was completed. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Paper Poppy

5.5x8.5 watercolor collage using White Nights over paper in Master's Touch sketchbook end of December. I used a part of a toilet seat cover adhered onto the support and when dry painted the red poppy. So fun to see where the pigment goes and is not predictable. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2024

Poppy Path

8x8 watercolor; I used a limited palette of aureolin, ultramarine, and permanent rose paints on 140 lb cold press paper by Master's Touch. First I did a wet in wet underpainting using the 3 colors. When dry, pencil sketched them in then went with what I felt like rather than using local color. Lastly, different color splatters were added to dry painting. Ref courtesy of artist Christine. Poppy Arrangement

18x10 watercolor on cold press 140 lb painted last week, a much looser design of floral stems in a vase. Although the red poppies command attention it is the stems in water that are very interesting in this tall vertical format. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith
