Butterfly Profile

3.5x7.5 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper done a few days ago using White Nights paints and a photo showing the monarch butterfly's profile. The pale flower gives a nice contrast to its bold orange and black markings. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Abstract Butterfly

Yellow Butterfly ~ Happy New Year

5x5 watercolor on Italia 140 lb. cold press paper begun yesterday and completed today as my final painting for 2019.  Just as a butterfly flies away we say goodbye to a long and eventful year with hopes of a better one unfolding.  Have a happy new year all friends and followers!

Yellow Butterfly

I Love Butterflies

11x15 mixed media on paper (watercolor, colored pencil, acrylics) done a few days ago just in time for Spring.  First I stamped white Montana acrylic marker over stencil with round shapes in background as seen upper left, then stenciled numbers 457.  When dry I added colored pencil marks using Magic pencil by Koh-i-Noor.  Light washes completed the background then the insect was painted wet in wet letting colors mingle and mix for this imaginary creature.

Butterfly and Coneflowers

8x5.5 watercolor and ink line on Strathmore Visual Journal for mixed media sketched yesterday and painted today.  I had planted echinacea (coneflowers) and here came the butterflies.  This mature monarch was especially striking with its black and white markings.  Look closely and you can see another bug to the right of the butterfly.
