Cluck Cluck Chicken

11.5x10 acrylics collage on gessoed 140 lb watercolor paper done last week in Bob Burridge's Lubbock TX workshop.  Bob showed us how to peel off the dried acrylic 'skins' from out plastic sheeting palette and collage onto the support.  No drawing was done.  In fact no drawing was done all week, only brush work.

New Blue Jeans

22x15 mixed media on Arches 140 lb cold press paper, a watermedia collage revamped for the last assignment in Polishing course with Sketchbook Skool.  We were to take an old figure sketch and add elements to create a new composition.  This has gift wrap, ink stamped tissue (rooster), collaged text and old watercolor painting cutouts, and pencil text across upper half.  Acrylic stamping was added at the end.  My brush made a blue heart on her left cheek by accident and I liked it so it stays.  A white paper doily that had blue and purple dye on it was collaged to her blouse center; front is white acrylic painted over another lacy stencil doily.

Cocky Rooster

15x11 mixed media on 140 lb cold press Canson paper (watercolor, India ink) done last week after receiving instructions on Sketchbook Skool in the Expressing series.  Make a drawing on paper and trace that onto tracing paper.  Color in the shape on paper with watercolor and let dry.  Tape your traced line drawing on top.  Lift up and add small lines or dots of India ink, then immediately lay the tracing paper down over the image and press with your fingers to transfer ink onto the watercolor image.  A different look for sure and it was fun.  My paper had been used as a backing sheet under larger pieces, hence all the little marks of paint.  I had an old sketch so reversed it.

Tyson Farms Hens and Rooster

20x16 watercolor of a rooster and his hens by their chicken coop; this work is SOLD.  I used one of many poultry photos taken at my friend David's country farm.  They look so scared, initially its title was "Terror at Tyson Farms" as they might have been hearing they were taking a trip to market.

Retro Rooster

10 x 14.75 mixed media (watercolor, acrylics, newspaper, napkins, catalog pages, ink) I composed over a failed geranium watercolor. The rooster head and neck were from a former failed barnyard painting with him and 2 hens that did not quite work. The hens I cut out also and adhered to an old shack scene called "Chicken Ranch", that should still be on this blog. His purple legs just kill me; feathers in front are from newspaper photos of old wood. It is a conglomeration of elements with a whole lot of country style and was fun to make.  This is a repeat post from 2011 as I don't have today's work photographed or the guest artist valentines ready.

Chicken a la King

22x15 watercolor of chickens on the farm pecking around the hay bales below the quintessential red barn.  Just as the rooster crowed to welcome a new sunny day, we welcome a brand new year.  Happy New Year to all my followers, friends, and fellow artists!
