Mother Hen

Chicken Ranch

15x22 watercolor collage on 140 lb Arches paper; chickens are collage cut from one failed painting on top of really bad old wooden shack painting to make a new scene. It is meant to be a humorous piece from two 'dogs'.  Moral of the story: Never throw away a bad painting. You can always recycle it or paint on the back side.

Mad Rooster

10.25x9 watercolor and ink (Uniball Vision Elite pen) on sketchbook, quickly sketched last night then painted today.  This mad rooster was one of the featured refs on WetCanvas in the All Media Art Events forum/Weekend Drawing Event.  Participants are given 2 hours to choose an image then render it.  My ink sketch in 20 minutes is shown below.

Crow Master rooster

11x8.5 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper, drawn and painted over the weekend for an online exercise with WetCanvas! Using my iPad, I flipped the white rooster image then used a summer filter to make him more colorful with vivid yellow gold and gamboge feathers.  Blue Bice by American Journey are the opaque turquoise blue areas for cool touches in a warm temperature painting.  No masking was used for his tiny feathers above his eye.  The larger the wattle and comb, the more females he can attract.

Tyson Farms Hens and Rooster

20x16 watercolor of a rooster and his hens by their chicken coop; this work is SOLD.  I used one of many poultry photos taken at my friend David's country farm.  They look so scared, initially its title was "Terror at Tyson Farms" as they might have been hearing they were taking a trip to market.
