Red Orange Cactus Flowers

5x7 watercolor using White Nights paints on Fabriano 140 lb cold press paper painted a few weeks ago from some blooming cactus. The blossoms of red orange are a nice complementary color for all the green pods. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Poinsettia Points

4.75x6.25 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper sketched yesterday then painted today for another weekend drawing event on WetCanvas.  The greens and reds are complementary colors and really stand out in this season.  The poinsettia's red leaves are very pointed and form the top part of the plant.

Berry Bush

4x6 alcohol inks on glossy professional photo paper done last week, an abstract botanical done with only a couple of colors:  Currant and Willow.  Stem was made with the tip of a wooden chopstick that already had dried Mantilla Black and Lettuce colors.  I added a drop of 91% alcohol to it to draw the stem.  I do like this complementary color scheme of red and green using the different hues.

Candy Stripers

22x30 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, Da Vinci and Daniel Smith paints, working wet in wet. Tulips, especially variegated, like these are my favorite flower.  A complementary color palette of reds and mixed greens is challenging to use as well.  Reds:  Alizarin crimson, Grumbacher red, perylene maroon, quinacridones: coral, magenta, violet, and permanent rose.  Other colors:  Arylide yellow, quinacridone gold, UB, Prussian blue.  This is an older work and is SOLD.
