Petal Pushers
15x22 watercolor of still life tulips set up in my dining room by an old oil painting. The light from the window behind illuminated the spring blooms perfectly. My hunter green wall adds a complementary punch to the vivid orange. This is painted on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper. Steps in creating this painting can be seen on this blog in February 2011.

Yellow Tulips in Blue Vase ~ plein air for Earth Day
10.25x9 watercolor and ink on paper done today plein air with Watercolor Horizons group. We had a paint out at Alldredge Gardens in Midland, TX. With temps in the low 50s and a north wind blowing, I chose to stay inside the building and sketch from life. I've been a member of the Odessa WH group for many years now and it was encouraging to see a new member bringing her two young sons with their art supplies. Earth Day is a good time to connect with plants. This was drawn with Micron 01 pen.

Late Bloomers tulips
11x7.5 watercolor on Fabriano 140 lb rough cold press paper; Daniel Smith paints. Today's daily work allowed me to visualize several multicolored and variegated parrot tulips mingling together. I direct painted with 1-2 applications of pigment on a water-spritzed surface, working from dark to light. Negative painting exists in the background as well as leaves and stems.

Petal Pushers - Tulips Demo
15x22 watercolor of still life tulips set up in my dining room by an old oil painting. The light from the window behind illuminated the spring blooms perfectly. My hunter green wall adds a complementary punch to the vivid orange reds. I will be posting each step here as a demo lesson; this is the finished Petal Pushers on Saunders 140 lb paper.Sunday, February 28, 2010
