Rousay's Horse

17x20 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper painted last weekend; ref courtesy artist Rousay for another weekend drawing event on WetCanvas.com. Participants have 2 hours to choose their image then paint it. I didn't quite make the time limit so had to add 2 more hours before finishing with this lovely sorrel horse of Rousay's. Black Horse

8x8 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper drawn and painted today. The sun and light were hitting parts of his forelock and mane so I added oranges and golds to go with the predominantly bluish black of his coat.  Left side background was left white.

Stalker Cat

12x9 watercolor done yesterday as part of another WetCanvas challenge of doing a painting from images provided in a two hour time limit.  This cat was about 1.5 hours and was painted wet on dry on new Fluid 140 lb cold press paper.  Fluid is made in USA in Kansas City, MO., and is quite like working on velvet. I had a cat with similar coloring to this one named Taco Belle, a Maine Coon.

Henry, Boston Terrier

7x9.5 watercolor and ink (Pitt pen XS by Faber Castell) on Ecosystem sketchbook done this weekend during a timed 2 hour event on WetCanvas.  The dog, Henry, belongs to host Susan Smith.  My maternal great-grandmother, Cynthia J. Garner Reese raised these dogs. She was related to our 32nd Vice President of the US, John Nance Garner, aka Cactus Jack, a Texas lawyer/legislator.  In addition, my mother-in-law Maxine Key Zant owned them as well.

French Village Street

8x6 watercolor and ink on paper in my new Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook.  The townscape is a scene featured on the current weekend drawing event on WetCanvas in which participants have 2 hours to select an image (courtesy of shadoe) then paint it.  I've added two figures lower right walking into the composition versus the original reference that had a person walking out.

Flamingo Pool

11x8.5 watercolor on paper from Crescent sketchbook done today, a quick pencil sketch from a WetCanvas weekend drawing event hosted by Susan.  I've edited out other flamingos and left the pool a murky muddy brown.  Background foliage was largely palm leaves and other plants around their water.

Guinea Baboons

5.5x8.5 mixed media on paper done weekend before last while on vacation.  A WetCanvas weekend drawing event, these baboons were featured by the host along with 15 other images.  Sketching with my Lamy Safari pen and grey Noodler's ink, I cropped several of them out and only included four.  Watercolor was added next to paint the troops' brown bodies and finally Montana acrylic marker in light blue used for a solid background.

December Pigeon

12x9 watercolor done today in about 45 minutes, a quick pencil drawing followed by loose wc. I grabbed seldom used in years paint such as Payne's Gray, cobalt violet and blue, then made sure lots of water was in a large round brush. It is done on 140 lb cold press Canson paper.  Splattering was done when paint dried.  He's featured on current Weekend Drawing Event on WetCanvas! as hosted by Susan.

Caleb in Striped Shirt

8.5x6 watercolor on ColorSketch paper drawn yesterday and painted today; he is my youngest nephew's son and just celebrated his third birthday.  In my photo he was eating and had crumbs on his lips so I omitted those.  Reference photo included in this weekend's drawing event on WetCanvas! and took me the full 2 hours allotted time.

Yellow-headed Blackbird

14.5x9.25 acrylics on matboard over pencil drawing finished today and featured on WetCanvas Weekend Drawing Event.  Host Mike Beckett posted photos for us the weekend before last in which we had 2 hours to make a selection and do a painting.  But this method of painting took longer as I am used to the quick washes of watercolor and its transparency.  I did enjoy studying the yellow-headed blackbird.

Beer and Onion Rings

5.5x8 watercolor and ink on Strathmore Visual Journal for mixed media done today as featured on WetCanvas Weekend Drawing Event.  In this event, a host will upload 16 images and participants have only 2 hours to select, draw, and paint their choice.  Mike Beckett had some great pictures and I chose this pub scene from Canada where he lives; my time was 1.5 hours. I've rearranged some of the photo elements such as a back table and chairs, then added a chair back behind the food.  I used a Lamy Safari pen with Noodler's grey ink.
