Horse in Sunflower Field

15x11 watercolor on Master's Touch 140 lb paper done in February from an earlier horse painting; this one has sunflowers added from a sketch done earlier also. So two images combined to make one composition of a cheerful subject. Painted wet on dry. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Shaggy Mare

22x15 watercolor on Saunders 300 lb cold press paper completed a few days ago of another artist's horse. I enhanced the reference and used a filter to get oranges and reds from sunlight hitting ner hair. Background is imaginary. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2024

Mane Event

22x30 watercolor done today from a previous small horse with flowing mane.  This one is on Italia Acquerello 140 lb soft press paper and I worked wet on dry, but wet areas with large flat brush first before laying in paint.  I was trying to make this fellow a dappled grey, so just let colors run and spread of mixed palette neutral pigments.  Background was left white of the paper.

Ready to Ride

8 3/4x 6 inches watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb paper; Daniel Smith paints, done today as my daily work.  Original photo featured on WetCanvas weekend drawing event by Lin.  You have to draw and paint your subject in under 2 hours.  This one was about an hour.Lin said the horse was in Laugharne, Carmathenshire, Wales where the RSPCA found him abandoned and starving.  A woman rescued him and they do dressage together.  For this work I've not painted her riding him and edited out buildings and clutter showing just him, such a handsome guy!
