Countryside Barn
11x6.5 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, done the second day of Tim Oliver's workshop held at the Midland Palette Club on March 23-25. (Ref courtesy of instructor). Using mostly Daniel Smith paints this was done wet on dry using lots of water with large mop brush. I enjoyed painting this old barn and farm setting located somewhere in west Texas.

Winter's First Day
8.75x9 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper done today, an imaginary scene of old ramshackle barn on the first day of winter solstice. Some snow is evident on the surrounding trees, roofline, and foreground. I used an old black and white barn photo kept for many years so all color is made up. Some Gansai Tambi graphite colors were used in background trees.

Behind the Barn
5.5x8.5 watercolor using White Nights paints done last week using no reference, a glimpse into farm life behind the barn. Probably everyone's barn had a corner where fence meets the building. In this scene, I have weeds growing tall, while fields can be seen in the distance.

Aunt Bea's Barn
15x22 watercolor, copyright 2009 Kay Smith. For more information about this nostalgic old scene contact me 1971ks@att.net or visit my personal website www.kaysmithbrushworks.usThis old barn was a demo painting done as a composite of two decrepit structures. Wild sunflowers added on its right side from a photo at Aunt Bea's Antiques here in town, hence the title.

Thunderstorm
22x30 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press, painted on 16 October at Frank Francese's workshop, Lubbock Texas. An imaginary scene, it was done using 2" brush, American Journey paints on dry paper, no pencil drawn shapes, layering color on top of color quickly in about 2 hours. The subject is actually the clouds not the buildings or cows.
