Emerging Poppies

9x6 ink using black Tombow brush pen on Master's Touch Bristol 103 lb, done second week of this month, a quick demo for class. Using no pencil, darkest darks were put in first followed by a rigger brush of water for mid-tones. Whites remain the white of the paper in this free forming floral of poppies. Giraffes Grazing

7x10 mixed watermedia collage on Canson mixed media paper. Drawn with an orange Magic colored pencil, then a fast underpainting with transparent pyrrol orange/quinacridone gold watercolors was done. When dry, I added brown and quin burnt orange patterns with some green, then the bg foliage. After that dried I used brown torn tissue paper that had small squares and a giftwrap paper featuring colored circles, adhered with matte medium. Lastly, I used a blue Magic pencil to make calligraphy marks in bg trees and bushes. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Quail in Cactus Patch

22x30 watercolor using Daniel Smith paints done week before last, on Daler Rowney Langston Prestige paper 140 lb CP. This was a commission ordered on the last day of our Alto Artist Tour on August 9th. A new customer wanted a scene with quail. Having no personal photos Free Reference Photos for Artists page on Facebook was very generous. Thanks to Anita Jones Bozich! Cactus photos were taken here in Big Spring om 6th street. An enjoyable landscape with quail was exciting to paint. Last week I took the painting to Ruidoso, NM, where new customer approved it. Currently, I am matting and framing it for her.
