Poppy Cats

15x22 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper, a painting using my fractured image style where various rectangles are marked on top of a pencil drawing.  Then each section is painted differently but the whole composition jives in the end.  These three cats belong to the owner who commissioned this unique pet portrait.  Flowers were also to be included so I chose poppies that would set off the neutral colors of the kitties.  This work is SOLD.

Mr. Stripes kitty

6x6 watercolor and ink line wash on Masters paper painted last week while in the mountains.  Mr. Stripes had the Siamese blue eyes but the alley cat's lined fur, a really handsome fellow, always ready for mischief.

Expressionistic Spaniel

6x8.5 watercolor on blue tinted paper/Daniel Smith paints. I drew this Cavalier King Charles spaniel in about 10 minutes yesterday then spent about 35 minutes painting in an Expressionistic style today.  To me, she appears very happy chewing her bone so I used vivid brights and not local color.  Karmela belongs to Thaesha in California, this weekend's drawing event host on WetCanvas in the All Media Art Events forum.  She set two challenges for us and I chose to paint in this style rather than my usual realism.  I hope she likes how happy I've made her pet portrait! Calico Corner - pet portrait

9x12 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper, drawn yesterday and painted today.  I did do a previous ink sketch using my grey tabby for a model, then changed to a calico for a little more pizzazz.  The background is left loose and abstract garden shapes morph in mixed greens and blues.

Donkey with Daisies

6x6 Derwent Inktense watersoluble pencils with Pigma Micron 03 sketch of a cute donkey named Juniper. After it was done, I added the uncolored daisies for whimsy in honor of Spring finally arriving.  Juniper was featured on last Saturday's WetCanvas Weekend Drawing Event and belongs to Jean, one of two donkeys she owns.

Bassett Hound

12x9 watercolor on Langton 140 lb cold press paper/Daniel Smith paints completed today from a recent ink sketch.  He seems oblivious to anything else going on in the world.

Bassett Hound sketch

11x8.5 ink sketch of a sleepy bassett hound, done yesterday and finished today.  I used grey Pitt ink pen made by Faber Castell and drew on Masters Touch sketchbook.  Every day I've been doing a sketch since 1 January, and some days do two, usually right after getting up at 5 a.m.  You can't go wrong with a cup of coffee, ink, and a blank white page! Maybe this one will morph into a new watercolor...

Cattitude

8.5x12 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Strathmore paper painted today, wet on dry, in about 2 hours.  Previously, I had sketched this stray cat one day last week.  This work was painted from a black and white print.

Togetherness - Puppy & kitty love

7x10 watercolor done today from one of my daily sketches last month.  An underpainting was done first using primaries.  I did not have a photo reference so this is winging it for the cute yellow labrador who thinks he's found his next true love.  Kitty, however, is not liking being pawed.  Forbidden love is what it is right now.  So have a happy Valentine's Day all you lovers out there! Practice some togetherness!

Milky Way

11x8.5 watercolor on Italia 140 lb cold press paper, drawn and painted today.  This is bad boy Chester who cannot resist milk, ice cream, or any dairy products so we cannot leave any unattended.  I did this work wet into wet using alizarin crimson and thalo green mix for his black coat, and quinacridones gold and burnt orange for the table and wall.  Other colors are permanent rose, peachy keen, and ultramarine blue.

Black Thomas and Garden Frog

11x15 ink on Strathmore wc paper, drawn with ink tip and blended with wet brushes.  This fellow was lounging in the garden with a frog planter looking on.

Bookworm cat

11x15 watercolor on 140 lb hot press Lanaquarelle paper, drawn yesterday and painted this afternoon.  This fat fellow is titled "Bookworm" and is a cat featured by this weekend drawing event host on WetCanvas! He has his own little shelf perch and seems quite comfortable.  Time limits to paint and draw are 2 hours.

What's New Pussycat?

11x15 watercolor and India ink on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, painted this afternoon.  I first sketched him in pencil then went over the lines with black ink. When almost dry I began laying in browns and golds wet on dry with 1" sable flat brush.  This is Roger, a cat I had years ago, doing his thing:  Sleeping! Colors used: Sepia, quinacridone burnt orange and gold, raw umber, UB, Coastal Fog, permanent rose.

Calico Cat and Fall Leaves

6x6 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper of a calico cat sitting amongst fall leaves.  She blends right in! I painted this about 2 years ago and named it "I'm Leavin'".  I really enjoyed painting all the negative shaped leaves.

Sleepy Kitty

5.5 x 6.75 watercolor of sleeping kitty curled up with her left foreleg hooked over her left back leg in deep dreamland.
This is wet in wet painted on Langton 140 lb cold press paper this afternoon.  This baby, Cleo, belongs to DLT on WetCanvas and was featured in the current Weekend Drawing Event.

The Cat's Meow

11x9.5 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper with Daniel Smith paints; a cat who is busy talking a blue streak to someone, probably about his dinner.  In the photo which was black and white, the cat was actually a grey tabby, but I've used artistic license and made him black using all the darks on my palette except black.  I used quinacridone burnt orange, gold, violet, magenta; midnight blue, manganese blue, thalo green, ultramarine, alizarin crimson, green gold.  Happy Halloween, everybody!!!
