Petal Pushers

15x22 watercolor of still life tulips set up in my dining room by an old oil painting. The light from the window behind illuminated the spring blooms perfectly. My hunter green wall adds a complementary punch to the vivid orange. This is painted on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper. Steps in creating this painting can be seen on this blog in February 2011. Green Pot of Flowers

6x6 watercolor and ink on Masters paper done today, a departure from my usual featuring cute blooming flowers in an olive green pot. Today's temp was 78 F so it felt like Spring already and put me in a flowery mood.

Tuxedo Tulips

15x12 watercolor of three variegated tulips painted on cold press paper.  This one had a red background which did nothing for the color scheme, so I mixed black (alizarin + thalo green) and painted over it.  This painting is SOLD.

Jacque Rabbit reworked watercolor demo

22x15 watercolor, gouache, over failed watercolor painting of a too detailed floral.  One of my line drawings was placed over the old one and the shape outlined in fine tip Sharpie.  I placed a full sheet acetate over and began laying in large areas with paint to see what worked and what did not.  There was lots of negative painting in the original piece and I wanted some of that patterning to show in the finished rabbit.  This was begun as a demo last Monday at the Palette Club in Midland, TX.  There are tiny touches of line emphasized with Caran D'Ache watersoluble crayons.  I will be back there in June 7-9 for a short workshop teaching this method; email me to find out more:  kay1971smith@aol.com

Here is the old failed painting, an imaginary floral which shows what was in my brain at the time last year, mostly nothing! I did like the warm coral, pink, gold, yellow, magenta, and orange colors accented by the dark hunter and lime greens, and cobalt teal blue.

Demo Tulips step 9

In this close up photo you can see where I've carried the lighter Prussian blue on down and around the blooms in front of the oil and underneath it to bottom lower left. Already I know I got too light value here so will have to glaze over it but only when it is DRY.

Petal Pushers - Tulips Demo

15x22 watercolor of still life tulips set up in my dining room by an old oil painting. The light from the window behind illuminated the spring blooms perfectly. My hunter green wall adds a complementary punch to the vivid orange reds. I will be posting each step here as a demo lesson; this is the finished Petal Pushers on Saunders 140 lb paper.

Wishing for Spring!

First Day of Spring 22x15 inches, watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper, painted last spring. It cheered me up seeing it again so hope it will for you, too. Love those daffies!
