Date Night Girl

9x7 watercolor and ink on 80 lb sketchbook paper done a couple weeks ago, a quirky girl dressed up to go out on a date. I used Micron 01 pen and White Nights paints in this fun figural scene. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Tulip Woman

11x8.5 watercolor on Grumbacher 140 lb cp paper, done last week. Using a line sketch out of one of my older sketchbooks, I combined tulip shapes to the side of the figure as well as her dress and behind her arm. A fun exercise. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2025

On the Edge of My Seat

6x4 alcohol inks on glossy photo paper done a couple days ago after making a larger work using only dark blue and flamingo pink; that one was very wet so I put the photo paper face down and did a pulled print so to speak. To me it looked like a seated figure with right foot up in the air...upper right is a cat tossing about. Since I just had to put my 18 year old studio kitty to sleep last week my world has been awry.

Bust of a Woman

 7.5x5 watercolor/ink line on Moleskine done today as Sketchbook Skool homework.  In this exercise we were told to do careful drawing of any object, then with no looking at it, do it from memory on another paper.  I selected an old antique plaster bust to do from life that's been in my studio for years.  With this view here you can see I've extended her Victorian hair across the page and up.

With the figurine out of sight this is what was the result on lined paper, a semblance of the woman but not as exact as the first sketch. In fact I have her left shoulder exposed as she's about to lose her gown.  A fun experience in the Stretching module of SBS; instructions by Fabio.
