Garden Chicken

6x8 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb hot press paper done earlier in the month as part of another online WetCanvas challenge. References are provided and participants have 2 hours to select then paint. The motivation is that you usually choose a subject that ordinarily you wouldn't and must quickly develop a liking for it or a passion. To me this chicken exploring her garden shows curiousity of animals and birds that is amazing to think about. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith

Big Red Rooster

12x12 torn paper collage on wrapped canvas done today that was my studio class demo.  This whimsical rooster was drawn with black felt tip marker onto clean white gessoed canvas, then various colors of torn paper were adhered with matte medium.  Tomorrow it will be finished with gloss medium varnish of several coats.  No photo references used.

Cluck Cluck Chicken

11.5x10 acrylics collage on gessoed 140 lb watercolor paper done last week in Bob Burridge's Lubbock TX workshop.  Bob showed us how to peel off the dried acrylic 'skins' from out plastic sheeting palette and collage onto the support.  No drawing was done.  In fact no drawing was done all week, only brush work.

Obligatory Hen with Chicks

6x8 ink sketch done in under 10 minutes last week of a hen that I have made look worried sick.  It is on Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook using Faber Castell Pitt pen XS, black ink. Next watercolor was added for this mother and baby chicks farm animals scene.  It is called obligatory because with each WetCanvas weekend drawing event, it seems there must be a chicken included in the photo images.

Rooster in pen & ink

9x6 using Pigma Micron 01 pen on Canson watercolor paper done this afternoon using one of my black & white rooster photos of a close up view.  This fellow looks quite menacing in a profile.  One of my neighbors is having rooster comb injections in her knee, which prompted me thinking about sketching one of the fine feathered fowl.

#InkTober day 24 ~ Fowl Mood

12x9 India inks on Canson 140 lb cold press paper done today for the #InkTober challenge, a daily pledge participating artists do each year in October.  Lots of chickens and roosters I've painted and this one was taken from an earlier ink sketch and recreated with inks. Its neck area is more orange in real life and not as red as this photo is.
