November Rose Petals

Roses in Indigo Vase

4.5x4 watercolor done on Canson 140 lb cold press paper. After painting winter snow scenes this is more in line with my character. Using brush only, shapes of various colored roses were put in then each hue from pink to dark pink to orange. An abstract background completes the simple miniature still life. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith

Fragrant Roses

Love's Gift

15x22 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper, an older work done by drawing in a silk red roses bouquet behind real creamy golden poinsettias.  I had photographed this combination in my bedroom and decided to add a background that might be indicative of a landscape sky or just a dream-like imagination.  This work is SOLD.

Everything's Coming up Roses WIP

16x20 watercolor work in progress on wrapped canvas; this is as far as 2 days working on it I've gotten.  The plan is to go over each area with acrylic.  All four sides are painted so framing won't be necessary unless a customer just wants to do so.  I chose this title because right now everything is coming up roses.  Sales are happening as are new licensing agreements so watch this space or my website for more news flashes.  No photo reference was used for this as it is all from memory.  Stay tuned for the finish!

Basket Bouquet - Work in Progress

A work in progress (WIP) begun today using no photo, only drawing flowers from silk ones I have in the studio.  Size is 15x22 and this is watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper.  After painting so many autumn and winter scenes my eyes were yearning for a colorful floral.  I will add a background garden design and the basket will be sitting on green grass.  So far I drew calla lilies, roses, and tulips.

Garden Gate Roses

24x18 watercolor on Canson Montval 140 lb cold press block finished yesterday after working on it over a week.
Love the combination of old heavy gothic style ornamental gate paired with soft velvety roses.  This is for an April WetCanvas garden gate challenge in which we must include flowers as well as a gate on the Florals/Botanical forum.  Daniel Smith paints for the most part were used painting wet on dry.

Roses for Valentine's Day

14 3/4 x 15 watercolor of romantic red roses just in time for a romantic Valentine's Day.  If you get these lovelies to give to your sweetheart they will last forever; the wine is waiting to be poured.

Ruby Slippers - Red Roses for Veterans

7.5 5.5 watercolor, drawn and painted from life this morning at 1100 hours on 11-11-11, to honor our nation's veterans on their day.  Red roses signify love and the red splatters denote bloodshed of those wounded or unable to come home, past and present.  Happy Veterans Day to all of you, our brave men and women!

Roses are Red

15x11 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb paper, completed this past weekend in New Mexico. Drawn from a single red silk rose, I created all these various views and made up the leaves and rosebuds. Painting petal by petal, I sanded colored pencil shavings into the wet areas for texture. Each area leaf or petal is one application only of watercolor and are not repeated glazes.

Back to Florals with a Bouquet

15x11 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper, drawn and painted from a florist's bouquet. Its leaves are actually down inside a clear glass vase. This is only a detail of the actual arrangement.

Roses Garden

9x12 watercolor, an imaginary scene not drawn but painted with #12 round on dry Canson paper. Negative leaves form a foreground of garden delights for Spring.

Yesterday's Demo "Fourth of July Rose"

12x9 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper, Daniel Smith, DaVinci paints, a quickie demo to warm up yesterday prior to doing the reworked watercolor of garden pots.

Woven Flowers of Passion

15x22 two watercolors painted identically, then cut one in wavy horizontal strips and the other vertical and woven together to make a new painting. I hated the original pink and red roses scene with a white cottage in background so this was a neat way to salvage the work and create a little interest. It has been secured to matboard to keep it straight and sturdy.

Gingham Pitcher of Roses

22x15 watercolor done two days ago using ceramic pitcher (a gift from my brother), plastic tablecloth as a stenciled doily effect, and roses from Bonnie's photo. Paper is Fabriano 140 lb hot press.
