Old Pail and Fence

Poppies by the Fence

22.25 x 16.25 watercolor on Langton Prestige 140 lb cold press paper painted today using multiple poppy photos.  I did quite a lot of negative painting in the background and worked wet on dry for the most part.

January Snowy Landscape

5x7 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper of first of the year snow along a country road. The sun has come out and promised clearer skies for those who wait.  We still have ice on our front walk so maybe soon it will be gone.  Colors used:  Quinacridone burnt orange and gold, UB, cobalt, Prussian blue, a mixed violet of alizarin and the blues.

Hay There!

8.25x11.75 watercolor on A4 handmade rough Indian paper I'd purchased when visiting the Tate Gallery in St. Ives.  After drawing the hay bales scene with Pigma Micron 01 pen, I added paint wet on dry, completing the work in just over an hour.  Daniel Smith watercolors were used today in this daily painting.

Donkey Daze

5x11 watercolor of two donkeys discussing their days over the fence, developed from previous ink sketch.  I'm not a landscape painter but will happily do one if there are animals, old barns, or people included.  This is on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper with Daniel Smith paints:  Quinacridone burnt orange and gold, green gold, raw sienna, UB, thalo green, alizarin crimson.   American Journey paints:  Midnight Blue, Peachy Keen, Coastal Fog, Periwinkle Blue, and Apricot.

Thru the Fence

5x9 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper with Daniel Smith paints, done yesterday afternoon.  There's something about old fences with vines and flowers poking thru that says country subject to me worth painting.

Day Brightener

22x30 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper of orange and red daylilies and daisies growing through an old weathered fence.  A few years ago I first painted this country scene and even then thought it needed more work.  So I've now spent the day reworking its background and adding blooms, enhancing values, and trying to add a bit more punch overall.  There is something about worn out wooden picket fences that beg to be painted.
