Winter's First Day

8.75x9 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper done today, an imaginary scene of old ramshackle barn on the first day of winter solstice. Some snow is evident on the surrounding trees, roofline, and foreground. I used an old black and white barn photo kept for many years so all color is made up. December Deserted Barn

5x7 watercolor using Winsor Newton travel kit on Fabriano 140 lb cold press paper done early this week in our Vegas hotel room. This old barn is not in use and is another in my series of those once necessary farm buildings. A limited palette of burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, raw sienna was used along with a few marks with a Derwent colored pencil for grass details. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Backcountry Barn

12x9 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper, an imaginary country scene of a rundown old barn. The rocky landscape foreground was fun to paint wet in wet in layers as was the middle ground. The fence is still up so suppose someone is running cattle. Storm clouds are building up overhead. When dry, splattering was done for textural effects. COPYRIGHT 2020 Kay Smith.

Leaning Barn

8x8 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper done over this past weekend.  Ref courtesy another artist in Canada who hosted this month's challenge.  These old barn structures are left abandoned in our country as well, a testament to earlier and simpler times.  Note the rusty old car parked forever in its front yard and old metal barrels in foreground.

Prairie Barn

6x7.25 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, an imaginary country barn landscape done today.  Yesterday I did two separate pours of colors across a very wet support.  First orange trio of colors was a mix of organic vermilion, cadmium yellow, and raw umber (all sedimentary).  Second blue trio was Prussian, lamp black, and ultramarine blue poured across the still wet paper.  Pigments separated with some staining and others granulating in dark areas.  The barn and telephone poles were sketched on dry paper then painted with dry brush.

Montana Barn

18x24 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper completed today after working for 3 days.  This barn scene is featured on a WetCanvas online contest as hosted by Hud.  The decaying structure and its companions of rusting metal sit silently in a grassy plain.

Wyoming Barn

September Barn

7.5x5 watercolor on Langton 140 lb cold press paper by Daler Rowney done today of an old barn in September.  Since this is the second day of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge I've finished this decrepit structure to add to her list.  You can see the other artists' works here on her 30 in 30 blog.  My theme is barns and old buildings for the month.

Abandoned Barn

9x12 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper/Daniel Smith paints done this weekend from one of stack of old barn photos collected over the years.  It was painted while in the New Mexico mountains yesterday.  The day before our skies looked stormy as shown.

This old barn was a demo painting done as a composite of two decrepit structures. Wild sunflowers added on its right side from a photo at Aunt Bea's Antiques here in town, hence the title.
