Midday Sunflowers

Sunflower Petals in the Wind Woven

9x12 watercolor using two almost identical paintings from my sunflower photo done last month. To create a woven piece such as this you must paint a pair of duplicate works. Then cut one in vertical strips and the other in horizontal strips which are woven as one piece. I adhered the back to another 9x12 sheet of Canson 140 lb cold press then matted and framed. Sunflowers in Blue Vase

12x12 watercolor on Masters Touch Premium 140 lb cold press paper done over the past weekend in part of an online challenge. I used Daniel Smith paints in a direct wet on dry method. Sketching was done quickly almost in a blind contour. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Sunflower Bucket

18x12 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper.  This is a combination of more than one of my photos of fresh sunflowers and the use of old metal bucket.  The dark background and sunny splash of yellow on the bucket front was done on impulse to see if it worked.  I used a direct painting method wet on dry putting in darks first.

White Fence and Sunflowers

18x24 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper completed yesterday that has taken several days.  I had painted this before and posted the first version recently, Large Sunflower Fence.  Since it was such a poor photo at a low resolution not suitable for prints I decided to paint it again.  This scene was along Sudderth Drive in Ruidoso, NM, where the Chartreuse Moose shops are now, and every variety of sunflower was blooming behing the white fence that is still there.  Such temptation to the painter could not go ignored, so hope this version is as well received.  The background is imaginary; I left out all the pine trees.  It will be added to my ArtSpan website and enabled for prints.

Tall Sunflower Weeds

12x6 watercolor and ink line on Strathmore 140 lb wc paper done today.  I used Staedtler 0.3 pigment liner pen to draw these roadside sunflower weeds I photographed on our last trip to New Mexico.  For now the background will remain the white of the paper but I might go back into it and paint it later.  Also since Tuesday I've posted daily works on Leslie Saeta's #30 paintingsin30days challenge she hosts annually on her blog Slices of Life you can see HERE

Sunflower Sizzlers WIP

 Now you can get a close up detail view of the top uppermost bloom and the one to its immediate right which will be more yellow tones.

With this view most of the upper half is done and along the right side.  I'll need to emphasize the right largest sunflower bloom and make it more red so as to stand out from the rest of the crowd.  Stay tuned for more work in progress in which I will post the finished vases and tablecloth.
