Elephant Stroll

7.5x9 gouache and ink mixed media on partially gessoed matboard painted recently of an elephant and her baby strolling along.  With their dull neutral colored hides blending into the landscape I added orange/red splatter flowers in the foreground.

Tusk Time elephant

6x6 watercolor over ink line sketch with Micron 01 pen, drawn and painted yesterday on Masters 70 lb paper.  I like how this paper accepts color splotches; it does not blend as traditional paper so never know what I'm going to get as an end result, such as with this zoo elephant.

Zebra - negatively painted

6x6 image of a young zebra which was done without any pencil sketch beforehand; his stripes were filled in using only black ink to create the shape.  This style of working is called negative painting.

Trunk Show (elephants) WIP

 Here is the FINISHED work in progress, 15x22 India ink and watercolor on Italia 140 lb cold press paper done today.  Colors used:
raw umber violet, raw sienna, sepia, and cobalt teal blue.

 

This view is the first one where I drew in the larger bull elephant using ink dropper.  I had spritzed my paper with water sprayer at random, then sporadically misted it over wet ink spots.  Once the ink is dry it is permanent.

I felt the composition needed one more guy to round out the trunk show, similar to show and tell only these beasts are comparing trunks at the local savannah club.  Actually the work could stand on its own either with or without the third fellow who appears to be laughing.

Elephant Eating

15x10 watercolor of a happy ellie eating from a tree.  Painted on Canson Montval 140 lb cold press paper I used Daniel Smith/DaVinci/American Journey paints.  This was done wet on dry.

Zebras and Leaves

15x22 watercolor featuring zebras painted positively and some negatively; I did use masking fluid in this particular work as seen in the white lines amongst the leaves.

Zebras and Gnus

15x22 watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press paper of a zebra pair surrounded by gnus.  Originally I titled this "Gnus Flash" but now will change that for search engine reasons.
