Striped Rears (zebras)

3.5x7 watercolor of four grown zebras standing together discussing the day's events.  Today I painted them on Canson 140 lb cold press paper (photo from WetCanvas Weekend Drawing Event).  With the WDE, participants are given 2 hours to choose and paint their subject, then post the results at that time limit even if unfinished.  This work has now been SOLD.

Grazing Zebras

5.75x7 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper, drawn and painted this afternoon. First I applied a primary color underpainting of ultramarine blue, quinacridone gold, and permanent rose.  After drying, I painted the animals' stripes with a mix of UB and quinacridone burnt orange.  Shadows were UB and permanent rose; background same colors plus Halloween Orange and green gold.  Lastly, splatters were applied to foreground with the same brown mix.  Some edges are lost over their posterior areas.  This work is SOLD.

Zebra Family

5.25x11.75 watercolor done this afternoon as my daily painting.  I had sketched these animals from small figurines years ago as a basis for a very large oil commission so the pencil drawing remained in my sketchbook.  Today I decided to draw them again on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper and using a limited palette of quinacridone burnt orange and ultramarine blue I did an abstract background. When dry I added stripes based on what color was in the initial wash.  This was quick and easy and too much fun!

Zebras and Gnus

Party Animals (zebras)

15x22 watercolor of two zany looking zebras with their stripes razor blade cut out, then a failed painting put behind upside down.  Now they have pattern as if they needed more! This is perhaps my first work in which I added one that just didn't work but did not collage it, done several years back.  Party Animals won a creativity award and a point with a major watercolor society.
