Blue Shutters Red Geraniums

12x9 watercolor on Bristol paper 103 lb done end of February, an imaginary country windowsill floral still life. Featuring red geraniums, this floral captures the welcome home vibe that only these flowers can generate in their clay pot and stone walls. Weathered blue shutters add to its charm. Tall Geraniums

9x2 watercolor on Canson 117 lb cold press done in December while on a trip out of town. The vertical narrow format would be fine matted and framed or simply used as a fancy bookmark. This imaginary floral watercolor is just enough to prompt longings of spring. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2025

Three Geranium Pots ~ demo

Three Geranium Pots ~ demo 15x11 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper demo done a week ago Saturday at our all day painting class. A few finishing touches were added later but for the most part the geraniums and pots demonstration was done in an hour, wet on dry. Some white gouache was added to the pots for residue to show the painters how a heavier opaque interacts with transparents. COPYRIGHT 2023 Kay Smith

In Full Bloom

12x12 gouache paints on Masters premium 140 lb watercolor paper completed over the past several days, clay pots of geraniums and violets lined up in a sunny spot. In this floral garden still life I tried to show sunlight upon green leaves with just a few yellow daffodils in the background. I really like the texture of the aged pots showing white residue caused by mineral salts or fertilizers. COPYRIGHT 2020 Kay Smith

Old Ingram Antique Store

22x15 watercolor on Winsor Newton 140 lb cold press paper of an old antique store between Ingram and Kerrville, TX.  I used to take off a week each summer to the hill country and study with Ken Hosmer who taught me the secrets of watercolor at Hill Country Art Foundation.  There are so many unique places to see and photograph and this stone house with red geraniums was begging to be painted.

May Sparrow

5.5x8.5 watercolor on Canson 140 lb CP paper, a backing sheet used behind smaller works that had marks all over, done yesterday.  You can see some of the marks including the vertical line in front of the bird.  The marigolds were grown over the winter as were the red geraniums.

Potting Shed Geraniums

9x18 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper finished today, a group of red, orange and salmon colored geraniums in clay pots.  Drawing from life included the rusty yellow and white forked spade.  Old wood planks serve as a rustic, country backdrop to this floral still life.

Blue Shutters

7.5x7 watercolor on Canson XL 140 lb cold press paper done today for a timed WetCanvas event.  Using one of 16 photo references provided by Helen in Michigan, participants had 2 hours to select and paint their choice.  This was a window in Provence that I cropped from a larger picture.  Using a #6 round brush only, no predrawing with pencil, it was done within an hour.   I especially liked the striped awnings and red geraniums.

Red Patio Chair and Geraniums Plein Air

9x10.25 watercolor and ink line on sketchbook paper done today on my patio.  The red wicker chair was moved outside for this plein air paint out I sponsored for all of our Watercolor Horizons Group located in Odessa, TX.  The old metal pail bucket has a crooked handle and is not this large.  The small blue birdhouse and chair cushion are from a dollar store.  Silk faux green ivy is in a black metal basket above the birdhouse.  Sketching was done with Pigma Micron 01 pen.  Splattering was added when dry at the end using Grumbacher true red pigment.

Geranium Garden Chair

22X15 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper that is now SOLD.  I first did a version of this imaginary garden scene chair and plants featuring lilacs in a basket so naturally the next popular would be red geraniums.

Corner of the Garden

10.25x9 watercolor and ink of a garden corner I've decorated with metal watercans, pots and potted plants.  Using Pitt pen, I sketched the items first then put in darks followed by midtones and lights last.  My red geraniums this Spring are especially lovely. This one was done last week when I had time on vacation.

Cup of Cheer Bouquet

15x11 watercolor, brush only, which is today's work of imaginary kitchen windowsill still life.  I used my own plants for models  and love the cup planters.  I surrounded the planter with white coffee cups and mugs.  Only one brush was used, #18 round synthetic on Canson 140 lb paper.  Definitely needed a break from painting so many birds and have two of those not yet posted.
