Pinto Roan

24x18 watercolor done earlier in April on Stonehenge Aqua 140 lb hot press paper, an imaginary horse that is a mixed pinto plus roan. Multiple layers of paint were added, removed, repainted, and changed. Splatters were done when dry to this imaginary horse for even more details in its coat. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2026

Multicolored Mane

15x22 watercolor done this month showing a partial horse's head and focusing on his beautiful multicolored mane. His mane flows with the wind and is as wild as he is. Reference photo is from one of the Alto wild horses taken last summer; he is part palomino and part pinto. Painted on Winsor Newton 140 lb cold press with Daniel Smith paints. American Saddlebred

10.5x9 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, American Journey paints. Size was 10.5x15, about 1/4 sheet, and I decided to crop off the right side as I'd blurred the rider and it didn't add anything to the composition...30 minutes to draw, 1.5 hours to paint. I used a black & white copy of the photo so color isn't too accurate but think it reads a sorrel anyway. This work is SOLD and was created in 2011. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith

Horse Sketch in Ink

8.5x5.5 ink using black Tombow brush pen on Master's Touch 80 lb paper in sketchbook done last week or so ago. I like using the brush pen as you can add water to it and get instant results that mimic watercolor. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith

Farm Horses

15x22 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, another one of my early farm animal paintings based on my dad's sorrel horses. This work is SOLD. It was painted wet in wet in 1993 when I seriously began learning watercolor. From the photo I had taken, this group was analyzed for its darkest dark color values then those were put in first. Heehaw Donkeys

12x9 watercolor on Bristol 300 series 100 lb paper done last month, another donkey painting in my series using my older photos from a farm south of town. They seem to be saying HeeHaw! as loud as possible and are such clowns of the animal world. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith
