October Sparrow
8x8 watercolor on Masters Premium 140 lb cold press paper sketched yesterday from my bird photos then painted today using mostly ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, indigo, sepia. Parts were done wet in wet, particularly the background and the bird was painted using a #1 rigger/script liner for a more realistic image.

Winter Chickadee
9.5x7 mixed media in Ecosystem sketchbook done week before last for another online event which I am hosting. Sketched in hard charcoal, I used watercolor pencils for the color then Brusho watercolor crystals for the background in this wildlife nature scene of a black-capped chickadee.

Sly Cardinal
10x8 alcohol inks on paper done today, another in my experimental bird series. A sketch was done using a Sharpie ultra fine point then various orange and red inks put in for the cardinal, followed by beak, feet, eye, then his black mask. With brown for the branch I then placed several drops of Cloudy Sky blue in background.

Fat Cardinal
6x8.5 watercolor and Faber Castell Pitt XS pen on Color-Sketch paper done last week, a whimsical look at a fluffy, fat male cardinal sitting out on his branch or twig. I love doing these fun birds in art, a common sight outside my windows.

Bird on Branch Silhouette
9x12 watercolor and acrylic on Canson 140 lb paper drawn yesterday and painted today. Inspired by a bird on elm tree branch outside studio kitchen window this one was simple to execute. I used the paper under other projects which accounts for the random color marks; the bird and branch had to be drawn on top of the unconventional underpainting. In some spots my mixed black of ultramarine blue/quinacridone burnt orange is not totally opaque and you can see color underneath such as over yellow areas. Dark blue grey is Derivan Matisse acrylic applied with sponge roller. Another fun one just playing around with color in watermedia.

Summer Sparrow
12x9 watercolor, gouache and ink (Uniball pen) on Canson 140 lb wc paper done yesterday. Using the paper as a backing sheet accounts for all the random color marks in the background. I used a 3" sponge roller and ran turquoise blue gouache in vertical manner from top to bottom. When dry, I drew the bird in with ink then added only part of its color markings plus the branch to complete the painting of the chipping sparrow.

Regal Redwinged Blackbird
10x7 watercolor on Daler Rowney 140 lb cold press paper done this past week while in the mountains. I go to an area by White Mountain schools that has a marsh and cattails in order to spot them in their natural habitat there and in nearby trees.

Cheerful Chickadee
5.5x4 watercolor and ink line (Uniball pen) that is today's work on a magazine insert card, those annoying things which fall out or are too stuck to come out. But the bird is happy walking along his branch amidst fresh blues and greens of Spring.
