Alto Windowbox

5.5x8.5 watercolor using White Nights paints done last week on Canson 117 lb cold press paper. I used a quick snapshot of one of the Alto Lakes new fitness center flower boxes on a sunny morning; this photo and others from there are featured on this month's WetCanvas Floral/Botanical challenge. Watercan, Hat and Plants

Hanging Baskets

Farmhouse Geranium

7.25x7 gouache and watercolor over a failed floral, an imaginary country flowering fuchsia pink geranium against old weathered wood. I used Artsy brand gouache jelly cups and a large round synthetic #12 brush on 140 lb cold press wc paper. COPYRIGHT 2021 Kay Smith

May Day Garden Bench

12x12 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper painted today for one of my online events I hosted.  This old bench has seen better days; sunshine and rain have weathered its former glory.  Pink petunias and geraniums along with small blue flowers flank its front.

Downtown Doors

10.25x9 watercolor and ink on paper done in 2016 from an older photograph I shot in downtown Big Spring.  Using Lamy Safari pen and grey Noodler's ink I got the two doors centered then added windows, wood trim, then bricks.  These doors face west and ground floor of the old building was an antique store with living quarters upstairs.  Walls were painted a pale warm beige unlike the painting showing reddish brown, and no flower pots or plants exist.  This same building houses the former Alberto's Crystal Cafe to its east side on 2nd Street.

White Cat and Potting Bench

22x15 watercolor of an imaginary gardening scene in which I put a white cat.  This has all the ingredients in a painting I love such as flowers, clay pots, annuals, watering cans, cats and tools.  Hollyhocks and geraniums have found their way into the composition as well.  It is painted on 140 lb cold press paper/Daniel Smith paints.

Studio

5x7.5 watercolor of my south studio wall bathed in sunlight that is caressing the roses and casting shadows.  Shutters are now painted green and window trim is pink.  This miniature is painted on 140 lb cold press Saunders paper.

Magic Afternoon

22x15 watercolor on 140 lb Saunders cold press paper sketched first on my patio of annuals and potted pansies.  The sun was casting its shadows onto the flowers, garden chair and table, during this time.  This work is SOLD.

Time to Garden

15x11 watercolor done today, a partly imaginary garden scene featuring my old potting table that is really pale green, pots of geraniums, and red orange poppies.  I have all but the poppies; hydrangeas  haven't bloomed yet.  Larkspur and lilacs have already shown their faces.  This was sketched yesterday using brush only, no pencil, and is on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper.  I painted wet on dry for the most part, spritzing with a fine water mister for softening far background elements.  Time to garden!

Geraniums for 1.99

11x14 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Saunders Waterford paper painted from a greenhouse nursery photo I took in Midland, TX. This was done in 1995 so I'd only been into watercolor for 2 years and not daily painting for sure.  Geraniums were cheap back then at Alldredge Gardens unlike today's prices.  This work is SOLD.

Hanging Baskets of Flowers

15x22 watercolor finished yesterday of fresh greenhouse baskets of red and variegated geraniums and mixed petunias.  Drawn from a combination of two photo references, I changed the left side pot to off white and right side variegated blooms were red ones.  This painting was fun to do as we have no flowers right now to buy to even dream of spring or summer.
