Farm Chickens

6x9 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper done today, an imaginary farm scene with chickens and a rooster pecking about.  The fowl were sketched from memory and I made an abstract background/backdrop for them in this colorful country barnyard painting.

Chicken Ranch

15x22 watercolor collage on 140 lb Arches paper; chickens are collage cut from one failed painting on top of really bad old wooden shack painting to make a new scene. It is meant to be a humorous piece from two 'dogs'.  Moral of the story: Never throw away a bad painting. You can always recycle it or paint on the back side.

Retro Rooster

10 x 14.75 mixed media (watercolor, acrylics, newspaper, napkins, catalog pages, ink) I composed over a failed geranium watercolor. The rooster head and neck were from a former failed barnyard painting with him and two hens that did not quite work. His purple legs just kill me; feathers in front are from newspaper photos of old wood.  It is a conglomeration of elements with a whole lot of country style and was fun to make.

Cluck Cluck Chicken

11.5x10 acrylics collage on gessoed 140 lb watercolor paper done last week in Bob Burridge's Lubbock TX workshop.  Bob showed us how to peel off the dried acrylic 'skins' from out plastic sheeting palette and collage onto the support.  No drawing was done.  In fact no drawing was done all week, only brush work.

Boss of the Barnyard chickens

15x22 watercolor on Fabriano 140 lb hot press paper, drawn and painted this afternoon in a loose, splashy manner.  This old rooster is hurrying the innocent young hen inside the chicken coop to show her who's boss of the barnyard.  There are a few touches of black India ink on the birds, plus spattering at the end when all was dry.

The hens I cut out also and adhered to an old shack scene called "Chicken Ranch", that should still be on this blog. His purple legs just kill me; feathers in front are from newspaper photos of old wood. It is a conglomeration of elements with a whole lot of country style and was fun to make.  This is a repeat post from 2011 as I don't have today's work photographed or the guest artist valentines ready.

Mollie's Chickens

5.25x7.5 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper done this afternoon.  These are Mollie Jones' poultry and she has them in all shapes, sizes, colors, breeds, etc. on her farm in East Texas.  After yesterday's mixed media collage intense concentration I felt like painting these barnyard babes.

Brown Calf and Cow ink sketch

5x7 ink sketch using black Tombow brush pen on Strathmore Bristol 400 series, doing only dark areas first, then using a rigger brush with water for grey midtones.  I used one of my old photos taken at my mother's west Texas farm in the late 90s.  The calf was brown and the cow black.  This was done today and already posted in WetCanvas! Southwestern and Western forum in the Sketch Thread, where your work cannot be longer than 1 hour; my time was less than 30 minutes.  I was captivated by the shadows as well as their bovine shapes.

Pigs Collage demo "Hamming it Up!"

Final work done this afternoon in about an hour, adding dollar store gift wrap roses, pearls, and lace to the foreground and to their bodies at random.  I like the pearls before swine idea.  I used Derwent Matisse Background in pale beige (a misnomer because it is pale yellow) gesso to smooth that area then brushed some in front.  Oil pastel accents were added as well in this mixed watermedia piece.

Sketch: The Three Little Pigs

My daily sketch this afternoon measures 8.5x11 on white drawing paper using Tombow black and grey brush pens.  Little pigs had been playing in the mud and enjoying their looking for mischief.  Tomorrow will paint a larger work from this quick draw.

Eggstra-ordinary Hen

11x15 watercolor on Italia 140 lb cold press paper, Daniel Smith paints.  It has been quite a long time since painting one of my fun yet funky chickens with an attitude.  In this vignette, the hen seems to be cackling at her three eggs or at something else beyond the coop.

Mad as a Wet Hen

15x22 watercolor and ink on 140 lb cold press paper, drawn using several photos then painted wet in wet.  After it dried I went back in with black India ink for minimal line work and loaded watercolor onto a brush for splatters of paint.

Piggin' Out on Lime Snowcones

8.5x11 colored pencil on Bienfang 50 lb paper of three pigs who had been caught eating snowcones and the far right guy had too many lime flavored ones.
