Cattle Rustler

8.25x5.25 charcoal sketch over gessoed old book page in my junk or grunge journal; page was brushed with Tim Holtz antique walnut stain ink.  This imaginary cowboy is about to rustle some free cattle and is one in my current outlaw series.

Clint Eastwood as the Outlaw Josey Wales

5.25x8.25 charcoal sketch today on junk journal page that had been gessoed.  I used Distress Ink spray by Tim Holtz mixed with water and a large brush to weather the page.  This is another in my outlaw series of notorious wild west guys whether in movies or real life.  As Clint Eastwood has been an idol of mine since watching him portray Rowdy Yates in Rawhide and seeing all his movies, he was the natural favorite choice.

Tall in the Saddle

22x15 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper done several years ago of my husband's grandfather H.N. Zant.  This work was painted from a small photograph and was SOLD to one of his sons.  I would like to see if it can be utilized to make prints.

Happy Trails

11x15 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper painted a few years ago for a western show a friend and I did in Oklahoma.  This shows the back end of a white horse and a cowboy in a red shirt, an imaginary scene for the most part.

Roping Horses

11x15 watercolor and India ink on Fabriano 140 lb hot press paper done this afternoon.  The photo I used was a full body view of the cowboy's horse so I cropped into it quite a bit and edited out background and foreground clutter, then added an extra horse.  Splattering was done on the main horse when paint was drying so some spots are blended while others such as the black ink, are not.

Ropin' Calves

11x8.5 watercolor over ink on paper in this western rodeo scene.  I sanded colored pencil into the wet paint as can be seen here, for texture indicating dust.

Horseback Rider

10x14 watercolor, SOLD, of one of my nephews riding horseback.  This is painted on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper using Daniel Smith and DaVinci paints.

Downtown Dust Storm

15x22 gouache on Arches 140 lb rough paper, Winsor Newton Designer paints. Buildings are in downtown Kerrville, Fredericksburg, and Big Spring, TX. This composite was fun to do. A lone cowboy walks towards old, closed down stores and banks while the sand swirls about him. Where is he going and what is he looking for? A woman? A saloon?

Saddle Up!

11x15 watercolor, copyright 2010 Kay Smith, of my brother's backside. I changed the horse's color to white with grey tail instead of sorrel. This painting was done while in my New Mexico mountain studio cabin a few days ago.
