Mama Bear and Cubs

8x8 watercolor using White Nights paints in this imaginary wildlife bear scene, done on Fabriano 140 lb hot press paper on first day of July. The lack of detail in the animals' features gives this work some energy. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Three Fat Pandas

9x10.25 watercolor and ink (Staedtler Calligraphic Duo pen) on paper sketched today from WetCanvas weekend drawing event hosted by Ros.  Her family visited China so she had references from that country.  These fat panda bears eating bamboo sticks was too cute to pass up.  Participants have only 2 hours to choose a photo and paint it and this one was about 1 hour 10 minutes.

16 x 20.5 mixed media on matboard. After covering the support with matte medium, I let it dry, then spritzed white Krylon webbing spray. The webbing provided a unique texture to paint over, so this was a thrill, and I enjoyed the variations in background and foreground that came from the matte medium where it did not completely cover the mat. Negative painting done for grassy areas and in around the cubs and mama. Photo courtesy WetCanvas reference.
