Cardinal Pair

8x8 watercolor on Italia 140 lb cold press paper done a few days ago using White Nights paints. It was snowing where we were in the mountains so easy to imagine this pair of lovebird cardinals watching out for each other nestled into a snowy pine tree.

Fluffy Female Cardinal

11.75x8.5 watercolor on matboard done this afternoon with no pre-drawing or reference used, only a brush and my imagination.  I have been watching hummingbirds and cardinals outside and when I found an used piece of mat already prepared with gesso the opportunity was too good to pass up.

Freezing Female Cardinal

9x6 watercolor done today from female cardinal outside our windows.  The red birds were visible in the icy snowy conditions, seeming to shiver although they were not.  I keep food for them and frequently they are seen on our patio feeding off the ground.  This work is on 140 lb hot press paper.  Two opaques by American Journey were used:  Mint Julep and Periwinkle in the background area.
