Ten Penguins

6x8 watercolor over ink line (Pitt pen XS) in Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook finished today, about 1 hour, then yesterday's sketch as seen below was 20 minutes.  This was for a WetCanvas weekend drawing event, a timed exercise giving participants 2 hours to complete a painting or sketch.  Ref courtesy sundiver (Wendy).

Penguin Colony

9x12 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper done yesterday of an imaginary penguin colony scene in the frozen tundra.  This main fellow is strutting along oblivious to the cold.  Every year I paint a penguin so this is it.

Chilly Chaps (Penguins)

8x5.5 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper with Daniel Smith/AJ paints, drawn today. I used several cool colored crayons including white to outline trees behind the penguins, then laid in loose spontaneous washes of ultramarine, manganese, midnight blues. Carbazole violet was used also.  No masking applied; just went around snowy white areas leaving as the white of the paper. Black was mixed with alizarin crimson and thalo green for this pair of chilly chaps.
