Fluffy Cat with Orange Markings

8x6 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper by Masters Touch, a cat pet portrait done earlier in the week. I only had a black and white photo of this unknown kitty so had to imagine its markings. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith

Pearl on Shag Rug

7x5 watercolor on Grumbacher 140 lb cold press paper painted a few days ago of my new kitten, a white calico named Mini Pearl. She loves to nap and relax on a new deep shag rug in the studio. Her colors are white, grey, and orange very muted. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Mini Pearl Resting

8.5x6 watercolor on Color-Sketch colored 140 lb CP paper over pencil sketch of new studio kitty done today. I used the last page in the Color-Sketch book of paper purchased from artist Judi Betts. The paper is a pale yellow tint. Pearl was resting on my leopard covered studio ottoman and her white fur was a nice contrast against that pattern and the shag rug diagonal design. White Cat and Potting Bench

22x15 watercolor of an imaginary gardening scene in which I put a white cat.  This has all the ingredients in a painting I love such as flowers, clay pots, annuals, watering cans, cats and tools.  Hollyhocks and geraniums have found their way into the composition as well.  It is painted on 140 lb cold press paper/Daniel Smith paints.

Blue-eyed Kitty

11x14 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb paper done a few days ago.  This lovely cat belongs to another artist's friend, so do not know its name.  Very faint peach color tabby markings are on its head with the lilac points indicating a Siamese parent.  The white mask and chest give beautiful tones to this kitty along with the vivid blue eyes.

Queenie cat

5x8 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, an imaginary diva cat lounging on her Victorian settee furniture.  I've done another cat, but in black, to post later that is a companion piece to this cat pet portrait.  I titled this one Queenie as she appears so regal on the red with purple furnishings.

Blanca cat and Blankets

15x22 watercolor of a white cat on black and white southwestern style blankets.  This is an older work where I was experimenting with using only black watercolor on Strathmore Gemini 140 lb hot press paper (we use the white of the paper instead of white paint with watercolor).

Splash 14 Selection for 2013

It's Official: Splash 14 Notifications!

http://www.artistsnetwork.com/medium/watercolor/announcing-the-winners-of-splash-14-best-of-watercolor

The above link was announced on WetCanvas! home page of the 106 watercolorists who were accepted and of that number Chris Beck and I are the lucky Art Colony blog gals.  Last August I painted a lovely white domestic shorthair cat with blue eyes named Sinatra, who lives in Tyler, TX, at an antique store called Special Effects on Old Bullard Rd.  Mollie Jones, another Colony artist, will tell his owner, Polly Hitt, about it.  The original has been sold to a collector in Bangkok, Thailand.

This 15x22 watercolor was featured as a step by step work in progress here on my blog during August 2011 if anyone wants to see its inception and progression.  The new book will be published in 2013 by North Light Books, F+W media.

Cat Pet Portrait

5x7 watercolor of white kitty from one of my older references; this was painted in my hotel rooms while traveling in Arizona this week. I believe it is a Turkish Angora breed.

White Cat "Sinatra"

15x22 watercolor on Fabriano 140 lb cold press paper, finished just now and what a lovely fellow he is surveying each visitor to his antique shop.  This was a fun but difficult painting!

White Cat "Sinatra" WIP Step 6

Getting more done and nearer to completion in this view with more glazes on the table and correcting curves, shadows, and light reflections from the lamps and his white fur.  Typically cluttered with treasures as most antique stores are, the cat seems to know he belongs here.

White Cat "Sinatra" WIP Step 3

Continuing on with background areas in this cat portrait work in progress; I've done dark tapestry folds and its reflections in cut glass. So keep watching for more reveal...

White Cat "Sinatra" WIP Step 2

Step 2 of white cat named Sinatra showing soft edged delineation of his shoulder, legs, neck and back.  Beginning background of a dark but rich tapestry frames behind his head and shoulder.  This pet portrait will emphasize values on a white subject and how to paint fur. I dare not mess this up as those blue eyes are following my every move!
