Sorrel Horse
11x14 watercolor vignette on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper of a rodeo horse fellow artist Maria found. In her reference only the horse's head was shown, so I have added his neck, mane, ears and hackamore rope. His coat was painted with a limited palette of quinacridone burnt orange, quinacridone gold, burnt sienna, and ultramarine blue.

Carriage Horses
5.5x8 watercolor done from some horse photos I'd been
planning on using but just hadn't. These two were hitched together to
pull their owner's carriage around the city. Support used is Strathmore
Visual Journal for watercolor and pigments are Winsor Newton travel
kit. I used a #1 rigger or script liner brush on the animals then a #6
round for background foliage and street shadows.

Wild Mare - ACEO
2.5x3.5 watercolor on Langton 140 lb cold press paper done today, a miniature in size but large and powerful as only wild mares can be. Also known as artist trading cards they are called Artist Cards Editions & Originals. You can mat these and frame them in a wider format; I've seen some with very big outside edges that make stunning displays on a wall. Visit my Daily Painters gallery (link on right sidebar) to purchase via PayPal.

Mane Impression - contemporary horse painting
22x30 watercolor with a small amount black India ink, drawn and painted yesterday using a design I flipped facing to the right (previously had the horse facing left and did a small version that did sell and another large this size). Kilimanjaro 140 lb paper cold press and Daniel Smith paints used along with #38 round brush only. Initially I'd thought to make him all black but color won out.

Follow the Leader Horse
9x12 watercolor on Langton 140 lb cold press paper finished today. These three pintos were one of many horses featured on WetCanvas in the Southwest/Western forum and ref courtesy Maria in Dallas. In the photo ( I used a black & white copy) the sky was virtually pale and clear, so I added a thunderstorm and clouds. Maybe this will make it rain.

American Saddlebred
10.5x9 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, American Journey paints. Size was 10.5x15, about 1/4 sheet, and I decided to crop off the right side as I'd blurred the rider and it didn't add anything to the composition...30minutes to draw, 1.5 hours to paint. I used a black & white copy of the photo so color isn't too accurate but think it reads a sorrel anyway. Thanks Jean for the reference we used for this weekend's drawing event in the All Media Art Event forum in WetCanvas!
