Spirit of the Sea (Gulls)

22x30 latex acrylic on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper, painted in about 2 hours.  The photo ref was at a shopping mall featured on WetCanvas so I edited out the stores and placed these guys back on the beach where they belong.  Sketch was done with watersoluble colored pencil and 3 colors of Crayons, then paper wet both sides heavily, and acrylics added with a 1" sponge brush. I blended with my fingers and at the end splattered using dark brown mixed watercolor plus white acrylic.

White Pelican

11x15 watercolor of a white pelican recently painted and featured on WetCanvas.  The background was a real challenge due to all the grasses.  Some areas were negatively painted but overall dark values set off the lightest lights of the bird's feathers.

Brown Pelican

11x8.5 finished version of a pelican on the wharf.  After my first sketch, Inktense pencils were added as seen in the image below.  Next I added water and gently brushed in the colors.  It is easy to see how just a small amount of water changes the whole composition into a more softer feel from a graphic presentation.

Initial sketch done with Pigma Micron 01 pen and is featured on WetCanvas.com in the Southwest/Western forum for March.
