Valentine Heart ~ Happy Valentine's Day!

12x12 torn paper collage on canvas is now finished after a 3 day work in progress, about 2-3 hours per day or more. I think the colors are great with the reds against neutrals. I did several coats of gloss varnish by Liquitex over it for shine and preservation. So many things are included in the heart such as blush brushes, red sofa, red dress, dice, jukebox, flowers, an apple (for that Adam and Eve connection), a lobster (for that romantic dinner), Tabasco hot sauce bottle, Big Red soda, and tomato juice. Old Fashioned Love

7.5x7.5 watercolor, ink and collage elements on Crescent matboard done this afternoon at a paint out. I first placed a heart paper doily from the dollar store on the mat then outlined each space with a 0.3 STA Lictin pen in black. Next cut out rose images from gift wrap and a cocktail napkin and collaged on with glue stick. Center romantic couple was cut out from French toile paper. Next background was colored in using transparent watercolor using a #1 script liner brush; rose shapes began to appear so those were further developed by negative painting. COPYRIGHT 2021 Kay Smith

Valentine Heart WIP step 2 torn paper collage

12x12 torn paper collage on canvas board, a work in progress in my series on hearts for Valentine's Day.  Here in this view you can see beginning background is composed of patterns in neutrals of brown, beige, black and white which will let the vivid red and red oranges show up more.  Part of the patterns are an animal print for that wild at heart person.  I will replace the letter 'H' on heart once I find one larger.  Stay tuned for the finish tomorrow.

Valentine Love Notes

5.5x8 mixed media on Strathmore Visual Journal for mixed media that is yesterday's work in my continuing heart series.  First I did a stamp of text with black ink, then drew hearts with white acrylic.  Next these were filled in with red alcohol ink and allowed to run and mix with acrylic paint.  Hearts were outlined with black felt tip pen and text outlined with black charcoal pencil.  Pink Montana acrylic marker made the edges complete and when all dry I wrote Love Notes on the lower left heart.

Vanilla Valentine

9x12 mixed watermedia on watercolor paper done yesterday for my 14 day valentine challenge.  First I drew a heart outline with white Crayola then made random marks with that over a scrap paper background.  Next I had white and light pink Montana markers along with Taylor's Pink Flamingo watercolor fill in the heart.  Using raw umber watercolor mixed with white gouache the back was done.  As it was too bright and I wanted a shabby chic look, I coated the entire page with off white latex acrylic after wetting back and front then lifted some paint off with paper towel.  When dry stamp letters spelled out the title Vanilla Valentine.

Be My Valentine

11x8.5 watercolor drawn today from an ink sketch I did this morning at 5:30; this is on Italia 140 lb cold press paper with Daniel Smith and Grumbacher paints.  I worked from a black and white composite photo so all colors are imaginary.  For some reason the guy ended up resembling Lionel Richie.  At any rate, it's the last in my Valentine heart series.  Thanks to the guest artists who participated in the fun! Have a happy heart day!

Recipe for Romance - Wine, Roses, Valentines!

15x11 watercolor done this afternoon with Valentine's Day in mind.  After drawing in all the elements of wine glasses, rose and leaves, I painted wet on dry.  When finished, I took an old red paper heart stencil and painted its holes in heart patterns to provide detail at the bottom foreground.  A little Chablis and Chardonnay go a long way for romance and if he puts the rose in his mouth, I'm his...

Guest Artist - Sea Dean "Where the Heart Is" ACEO

2.5x3.5 ACEO by guest artist Sea Dean.  Upon first glance I thought "this is just a macro view of a tulip". But on closer inspection I see that she has painted dark purple tiny hearts around its center.  Visit her blog to for more works such as this or to bid on it:

Fondness for Hearts

5.5x7.5 watercolor on 140 lb hot press paper done yesterday. I first drew in 4 heart shapes with a white wax crayon, then did a quick underpainting using alizarin crimson and thalo blue. Over those colors I laid crumpled plastic wrap and let it dry all day.  Later, I lifted up the plastic to find a multitude of crinkled areas from which new hearts were developed by negative and positive painting.
