Holly Jolly Santa

8.5x5.5 mixed media done last week of an imaginary Santa Claus portrait. I used Winsor Newton sepia 0.3 fine liner pen, White Nights watercolors, Crayola Pip Squeak washable markers, and Tombow brush pens for portraits. This is in Master's Touch mixed media sketchbook. Lots of fun creating Old St. Nick as he's always smiling. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2025

Scrooge

5.5x8.5 mixed media (ink, watercolor, colored pencil, gouache) on paper done in 2014 from A Christmas Carol featuring Ebenezer Scrooge. Written by Charles Dickens in 1843, the stingy old curmudgeon's name is synonymous with misers who detested the giving Christmas spirit. I don't think I've ever seen any Scrooge images painted so thought, why not? MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone! Copyright 2024 Kay Smith

December Snowman

6x4 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Grumbacher paper, done over the past weekend from one of my saved line drawings. So color is all imaginary, too. A fun subject when you don't plan on any long serious work in the studio. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Elf Portrait

8x6 watercolor on Hahnemuhle grey 95 lb paper in sketchbook done a few days ago during our paint in. I sketched the elf from life, using the plastic figure head with his green striped flannel suit and red felt collar. It has a hanging loop at the top to hang on a tree or elsewhere with a tiny brass bell on his hat. My mother bought some of these in the 1960s or 1970s and this one is all that is left. Classy Santa in junk journal

8.25x5.25 another image done yesterday in my junk/grunge journal. He's a classy Santa in his black trimmed suit. I sketched in hard charcoal pencil over gesso, then added acrylics and three snowflakes collage.  Also I used peach marker for skin tones and watercolor for eyes. Colors should do well to spiff up the old 1959 discarded book I'm using for a journal. Image courtesy Li Newton/WetCanvas in a weekend drawing event. Participants have 2 hours to select an image and paint or sketch it.
