Winter's First Day is Coming Soon!
8.75x9 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper, an imaginary scene of old ramshackle barn on the first day of winter solstice. Some snow is evident on the surrounding trees, roofline, and foreground. I used an old black and white barn photo kept for many years so all color is made up. Some Gansai Tambi graphite colors were used in background trees. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Old Farm in Winter
8.5x5.5 watercolor on 80 lb Master's Touch sketchbook paper completed yesterday, an imaginary winter scene including an old faded red structure that could be a shed, house, or barn. Grown up in weeds, the bare branches of trees guard its place in nature on the old farm.

Winter is Coming
6x6 watercolor on Masters Touch paper 80 lb. cold press in sketchbook done last week for a small but cold winter scene just beginning in my imagination. From the old dead tree with its few leaves hanging on to the snow drifts one can dream the season will come soon.

Frigid River
6x9 watercolor monochromatic using only one color: Moonglow (Daniel Smith) painted last week using a windswept, frozen environment as the basis. Snow and ice can be seen encircling the icy water surface while the tree limbs and branches bend from the weight of winter.

Front Gate Tracks
6.5x4.5 ink line and gouache (Artsy) on tan sketch paper done a few days ago. This is our metal gate entry at our New Mexico place. The snow had fallen last month around my birthday so took this photo which shows cat paw prints through the white stuff. In this the tracks resemble human shoe prints.

Frozen Twisted Trees
5x8 mixed media on Canson 140 lb. cold press paper done today, an imaginary scene I could experiment on with different combinations. For this I did a pencil sketch first, then used white crayon over various tree parts, ground, and water. I used both black and white Brusho crystals next over a partially spritzed paper. I made a small amount of black Brusho mixed with water for a darker hue and used that to create more than one value. Diluted amounts of black and white Brusho made the sky and foreground.
