Scattered Tree Trunks
6x9 mixed media on 70 lb paper done weekend before last while in the mountains. This is the 3rd or 4th version of the same landscape winter scene done before. I used Derwent watercolor colored pencils, different brands colored pencils to create this cold scene.

White Tree Trunks in Snow
6x8 graphite watercolor blue shade with white oil pastel on Hahnemuhle grey toned 95 lb. paper done last weekend while it snowed. Using a scene previously done, this was quickly sketched and painted for a different take on the same mountain slope.

Birch Woods
4.5x3.5 acrylics on Bristol 400 series plate, an imaginary scene of birches in the woods covered in snow. The paper had been covered in various marks of different media in black and green so I painted over that.

Step 8 - Middle ground plus a few greens
Adding warm colors to base of trees, still on dry paper, I went across this area to set the trees down. A few warm greens mixed with Arylide, ultramarine, Midnight, and Vitruvius blues were set side by side. Light yellow green areas show just a touch of summer we've left behind. More glazing on backlit trees, each tree being different from its neighbor, was done. This is a design principle called variation that I use a lot with each piece and keeps them from being boring.Step 6 - Full view and distant background
