Winter's First Day is Coming Soon!

8.75x9 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper, an imaginary scene of old ramshackle barn on the first day of winter solstice. Some snow is evident on the surrounding trees, roofline, and foreground. Evergreen Creek

12x9 watercolor on Winsor Newton 140 lb cold press paper done week before last with no pre-drawing, a partly imaginative winter scene complete with its frozen creek water and evergreen trees. Spruced up for Winter

December Days

4.25x5.5 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper done yesterday of an imaginary winter landscape complete with snow and overcast skies.  I wanted to use color combinations never tried so for the sky burnt umber + phthalo blue were mixed and same colors throughout except for the buildings which was Indian red. That red stays on my palette but is not popular as it is opaque.  I mixed a grey of what colors were in the mixing part of the palette for the frozen water.  Distant hills were softened with a damp brush.  I am trying to paint better landscapes along with portraits, two subjects that are not easy.

Frozen Scene

6x9 watercolor and white wax crayon on Canson 140 lb cold press paper begun yesterday with our cooler temps then finished today with even colder air.  Tomorrow heralds our first freeze of the year which hopefully will last only one day.  In this imaginary scene frozen water, river banks, and trees embrace a frigid sky.  Some negative painting was done around the trees.  No pencil drawing or reference was used.  This is another in my frozen imaginary landscape series.

Snowy Street

9x12 watercolor which is today's work on Canson 140 lb cold press paper.  Using a brush only in this winter snowy street scene, I began with the house dark areas then on to the trees.  Midtone shadows were last.  This will be featured on the Landscape forum on WetCanvas; reference library photo that I cropped foreground and some trees from both sides for a closer view of the house.
