White Peony

11x15 watercolor WIP is finished now.  Additional greens were filled in the blank left side area, then values checked on white petals.  Each pencil line has a light color to define its edge.  Lastly, stamens were painted in using a #6 round.  This floral watercolor may be purchased directly from me or by visiting my gallery on Daily Painters located in lower right sidebar (PayPal).

WIP Basket Bouquet

In this step you can see I've continued on with the darker areas under basket and tulips, with the addition of mixed greens.

Work in Progress: David's Head in gouache

Beginning charcoal sketch of Michelangelo's statue of King David.  This is over phone book yellow pages adhered to Lanaquarelle 140 lb hot press paper, and is a work in progress.  Yesterday I had finished my watercolor study of David's head in preparation of this I'll do in gouache, using Turner paints.  The phone book pages are laid on top of a 1:1 ratio matte medium to water mixture brushed on, then strips of 1" wide masking tape on top of the pages, let set for 10 minutes and then remove tape and as much of the pages possible.  I let this one set about a minute too long as it did not all peel off.

WIP Watermedia beginning painting

Now is time to begin laying in color, the fun part, behind the lower right sunflower and background.  I will probably leave in the white areas left that were under the coffee filters as that might be a nice suprise element.  With no photo references to guide me, this one will be pure intuition and color sense, or just plain nonsense!

Morning Glories Top Flowers Detail WIP

With this view I've provided you can see a detail of the variegated markings on top blue and white flowers. There's a mix of blues, magenta and violets within their coloration. Paints are Manganese blue, UB, Cobalt, and quinacridone magenta. I'm almost done with the painting.

WIP Morning Glories Top Flower

Work on the top glory is slow going, adding its variegated striping and checking values as I go along. To get the right blue hue am having to mix cobalt with the other two colors of UB and Manganese. Stay tuned!

WIP Detail Morning Glories Shadows

The lower portion of the painting can be seen here in a close up detail of the bottom leaf and beginning shadows on the all white morning glory. I especially like the furled bud with its spiral twists. Stay tuned for more.

Work in Progress: Blue & White Morning Glories

This bottom image shows you that I selected a blue and white morning glory photo taken at Lake Ransom Canyon. I turned the paper vertically then drew in pencil over the acrylic underpainting, but will paint in watercolor. The flowers will not be identical to the photo as I'm not doing photorealism, but fine art. Middle image shows top right background design; background will be very interesting with lots of shapes and other ephemera whereas flowers will be simple. They already have the underpainting to establish a varied pattern of cool blues and whites.
