Sparrows and Pigeons

9x12 acrylic inks on Canson 140 lb cold press paper done a few days ago for an online challenge. We were given a curved line, a long diagonal line, and two short diagonals and told to invent an artwork using the lines, so this is what I came up with that fit the bill.  No photo references used so it is totally imaginary.

Saw-whet Owl

12x9 watermedia on Bristol 300 series paper done today using two different media in my ongoing bird series in various art products.  For this, I used a black Tombow brush pen and only put in black areas first, from one of my bird photos, doing negative painting.  After those, I used a #14 round and with fresh water, created the grey midtones leaving whites.  While most areas still wet I sprinkled black Brusho crystals then blended some areas with a wet brush, being careful not to over blend or over mix.  Look closely and you can see the orange and blue within the Brusho.  No pencil pre-drawing done in this vignette.

Chickadee Crevasse

12x9 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper, drawn yesterday with a brush only and painted maybe 1/3 of it, finishing up today.  An abstract pink, orange and green background paired with neutral palette mix/soup greys are a soft foil for the little bird, another in my blackcapped chickadee series.  He appears to be at the edge of a large crevasse looking down, hence the title.

Special Delivery storks

22x15 watercolor on Langton 140 lb cold press paper/Daniel Smith paints, done wet on dry today.  Look closely and you can see a baby stork in the unusual nest.  This bird painting is featured in our WetCanvas weekend drawing event where participants have 2 hours to draw and paint their choice of references.  I cropped the original reference and moved the large stork closer to its edge that shows only the left uppermost nest corner.  (Courtesy photo Connie van Winssen, Netherlands)

Hawkeye

9x12 Tombow black brush pen with watercolor on Bristol board 300 series, painted last weekend during WetCanvas' Weekend Drawing Event.  In that challenge, an artist must choose a subject and draw and paint within a 2 hour time limit, or if not done, photograph their progress at the 2 hour mark.  With this cropped version of the raptor, I only intended to do a value study with the Tombow initially, then decided to add watercolor for a glimpse into the hawk's environment.
