Girl and Cardinals ~ Day 27 #30Faces30Days

8.5x5.5 watercolor and ink line on paper for day 27 of the Sktchy challenge #30Faces30Days.  In this exercise, only the girl's image was given and we had to improvise a story for the rest of it as to what she was looking at above.  I chose a pair of loving cardinals whose colors and pine needles went with her attire.

Manet's Bouquet

9x5.5 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper painted today of a simple mixed flowers bouquet in a vase originally done by Edouard Manet a year before he died.  He painted in oils, however, so had to adapt this to watercolor.  The pink roses are my favorite.

Three Black Hollyhocks

5.5x3 watercolor on Italia 140 lb cold press paper painted this afternoon quickly, brush only, so no pre-drawing with pencil and fretting over the lines.  I used a #12 round brush and the same alizarin crimson + thalo green combination for the black color.  The bottom blooms have quinacridone violet and UB along with a touch of carbazole violet in this imaginary old-fashioned garden.

Black Pansy

7.5x5.5 watercolor on Lanaquarelle 140 lb hot press paper done over the weekend from one of my pansy photo refs.  I did a monthly challenge on WetCanvas spotlighting dark or black flowers in their Florals forum. I still have a large black hollyhocks to paint soon.  Mixing my own black I used alizarin crimson and thalo green, two of the most transparent colors.  For variety I also added UB and carbazole violet to the mix.

Carnation the January Flower

11x15 watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press paper painted from a black & white photo (no color reference).  First I spritzed limited palette colors of arylide yellow, cobalt blue, and permanent rose on dry paper.  When that dried I then began pushing warm high key colors that reminded me of sherbet.  The plain ordinary carnation is my birthday flower and it usually plays second fiddle to the rose or other more stately varieties with reputations.

Birthday!

8.5x5.5 watercolor and ink on paper, an older work, a small still life bar drink scene complete with olives, cocktail napkin, and colorful shapes in the background.  Now it has been maybe 30 years since I had a martini but with a birthday coming up on the 23rd I just might.  For old times sake.  For art's sake.  For just being old's sake, lol!
