Pansy Face

14x11 watercolor floral, a macro view of a small yellow and purple pansy.  With its dark almost black center, its smiling cheery face says it is time to plant me in your garden pots.  Negative painting done on leaves and background after doing an overall light value underpainting.

Beautiful Bay Horse

6x8 watercolor on Stillman & Birn Zeta series painted earlier in the month  for another online challenge; ref courtesy WetCanvas.  There was another steel bar in the fence or gate in front of the horse but I omitted it to show more of the animal.

Rocking Robin

11x15 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper drawn and painted today quickly as didn't have much time. Background is loosely done with indigo, green gold, aureolin, and ultramarine blue while the red breasted robin gets ready to rock his latest song in this imaginary nature scene.

Autumn Landscape in Inks

4x6 alcohol inks on paper, an abstract done today using 4 colors of Willow, Ginger, Burro Brown, and Sunset Orange. I used canned air to make the vertical tree like marks on right side and going across to the left middle.  With cooler temps and rain every day since last week, autumn definitely is here and these colors can testify.

Poppies and Clouds

4x6 alcohol inks on professional photo paper done today on the back of a failed one.  Turning it over I decided to use the blue grey color that seeped onto the back as clouds, and add Senorita Magenta ink drops to make poppy shapes.  Green lines were all made by putting an ink drop onto the tip of a chopstick then using it to draw, even laying it on its side and rolling it.  Spots of alcohol 91% were added here and there to encourage blending and dilution.

Wild Mustangs

4.5x7 mixed media done today using the Micron 03 pen sketch below on alcohol ink marked newsprint from last week's ink class.  I had cut this section out with intention of using it somehow.  The wild horses reference, courtesty WetCanvas/Li Newton, is currently featured in the regular weekend drawing event in which participants have 2 hours to select an image then do a work from that.  When dry from watercolor and gouache applications, I adhered it to matboard using matte medium and a brayer.  Image COPYRIGHT 2017 Kay Smith; 1971ks@att.net contact email to purchase.  Cost:  $95 plus s&h.*

Texas Thistle

9x9 alcohol inks on paper done Saturday as one of the several class demos.  The abstract multicolored spiky shape reminded me of wild thistles, hence the title.  At any rate it must be a wildflower of some sort.

Wino Chef

9x12 mixed media collage on Canson XL watercolor paper done this afternoon.  Sketched with Micron 05 pen on a backing sheet for smaller works, the face and scarf was what I concentrated on, as the figurine I used to photograph him had him on a little bicycle.  It was one of the refs I put in WetCanvas weekend drawing event currently in progress.  I first painted him in watercolor, then used a black and white Montana acrylic marker, then white acrylic on his chef jacket.  Collage is bar and restaurant ad texts adhered with Liquitex matte medium.

Zebra in Grass

AFTER
5.5 x 7.5 mixed media on foamcore done today from my zebra photo I featured on current WetCanvas weekend drawing event challenge.  Participants have 2 hours to do a painting from 10 images the host furnishes.  The challenge was to rework or redo another one with one of the 10, so I chose yesterday's alcohol ink that I didn't really like.  Using a Staedtler Lumocolor permanent ink pen, the animal's stripes were put in on top of the ink.  Next I cut blades of grass and collaged them onto the foreground with matte medium.  Total time was 1 hour.

Clownfish

8.5x5.5 Montana acrylic markers and Uniball Vision Elite pen on Bienfang sketchbook done today as a timed exercise on WetCanvas.  There were two clownfish in the ref Connie provided but I eliminated one due to space, and did not sketch in all the coral noodles.

Bee on White Cosmos

11x14 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper begun yesterday and finished today. The busy bee was hard to get its transparent wings to look paper thin so I did use a tiny amount of white gouache on the left wing tip. I put together a combo from my cosmos and insects refs for this garden and nature painting.

Brightbeard

10.5 x 7.5 alcohol inks on freezer paper done yesterday, my third in a series of men with beards.  No pencil used with this.  Taking a cotton swab that already had a bit of ink on it, I moistened with 91% alcohol and made an oval right eye shape, then added blue, then black.  The left eye followed.  Marks were made with ink drops on the tip of a chopstick.  Ginger and Tangerine were the gold and orange accents.  Mantilla Black was last for the bottom half of his beard.  Inks mixed using canned air and blending solution for this abstract portrait.

Unfurled Rose

4x6 alcohol inks done last week on white foamcore board, another abstract floral piece made by using only a few colors and canned air.  Since it reminded me of a rose opening I titled it as that.

San Patricio Church

14x11 watercolor of the tiny Catholic church located in San Patricio, New Mexico, where we went to do some on location, or plein air painting.  This is off main Highway 70  from Roswell to Ruidoso and is reputed to be the oldest Catholic building in the country.  Its white and green are lush against the September sky and landscape as it sits watching over the small cemetery in front.  This work is SOLD.

Woven Flowers of Passion

15x22 work is actually two identically painted scenes of pink roses in front of a house. The original was ho-hum boring so a few years late...
