Frosted Flakes

10.5x7 watermedia on Lanaquarelle 140 lb hot press paper. First I marked tree cone shaped lines with white and grey crayons, then filled in with various watercolors: Raw umber, Coastal Fog, Mint Julep, Midnight Blue, UB, Manganese Blue and Daniel Smith's Undersea Green. While still wet, I dropped more colors in, then splattered white gouache on all of it. It's just a fun one of three trees in snow with their frosted flakes. Merry Christmas! COPYRIGHT Kay Smith

Wild Fuchsia Christmas Ball

10.5 x 8 watercolor done a few years ago during a snowfall. For this image, I used a large hot pink fuchsia Christmas ornament. Light reflections are the shapes seen within. For shapes outside the sphere, I drew a nail polish bottle and let its top rounded edge be seen within the ball. Lastly I used a rubber stencil stamp to make the curlicue marks for patterns. Some of these lacy looking areas were imaginary on the polish bottle as seen on far lower right. Merry Christmas to all of you! COPYRIGHT Kay Smith

Scrooge

5.5x8.5 mixed media (ink, watercolor, colored pencil, gouache) on paper done in 2014 from A Christmas Carol featuring Ebenezer Scrooge. Written by Charles Dickens in 1843, the stingy old curmudgeon's name is synonymous with misers who detested the giving Christmas spirit. I don't think I've ever seen any Scrooge images painted so thought, why not? MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone! Copyright 2024 Kay Smith

6x8 watercolor using White Nights paints on handmade paper 140 lb done yesterday. This was a demonstration for my Monday art class and took approximately 30-35 minutes. I've used one of my red hollyhock photos from studio garden. Here I used a direct painting method with various pinks, oranges, and reds. Finishing touch this morning was to add a thin glaze/wash of transparent pyrrol orange (Daniel Smith) over the bloom. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2024
