Meadow Hummer

8x6 watercolor and ink marker on 140 lb cold press handmade rough paper done today. I used Rosa Gallery paints from Ukraine and a Sharpie marker along with STA Lictin black brush pen. This is my tenth neurographic piece. I first did a graphite sketch of the hummingbird then painted her in realistic manner. I then penciled in a vertical box for the bird. When dry, diagonal lines were put in along with loops and curves with Sharpie Ultra Fine pen; lines were rounded with brush pen. Then the outer one inch on left side and more along bottom L shape became my background. Spatter or splatter was done while wet, then more quin pink when dry. White space in the bird box was left white while oblong space encasing her were colored in with the pink pigment. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2025

Broken Fence

7x9 watercolor using White Nights paints on 80 lb sketchbook paper done last week as part of another online challenge on WetCanvas! in the Watercolor forum. Ref courtesy CMorPaint and is a scene in Canada. I took the liberty of altering the fence rails as they were straight in the photo. Most artists know to provide a way into a composition rather than block viewers out with a full fence. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2025

Birdwatch

7x9 watercolor and ink using White Nights paints and Micron 01 pen on 80 lb sketchbook paper done last week. Another imaginary pair of birds with not too much realism but just enough to say Spring is here. At least the cedar waxwing and common sparrow think so. COPYRIGHT 2025 Kay Smith

American Goldfinch Garden

8x8 watercolor on Grumbacher 140 lb cold press paper done last week, another neurographic art, my 5th effort. I've used White Nights paints and a mixed black for the dark lines instead of the marker ink normally used. With this piece, a realistic shape of the goldfinch was added to create interest and variety. COPYRIGHT 2025 Kay Smith

Desert Horned Toad

7x9 watercolor done last week from my selection of photos for the Animal and Wildlife monthly challenge on WetCanvas. These horned toads live in one of my studio flowerbeds and I do not eradicate the red ant population there as the spiky lizards live on them as a source of food. This is on Master's Touch sketchbook paper, 80 lb., with White Nights paints. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2025

Longhorn Skull

22x15 watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press paper completed last week. This was a remake, redo, recycle of a woman with abstract background in a horizontal format. Flipping the image vertically, I sketched a longhorn skull outline over the existing painting, then added colors and the large bilateral shadows. Lastly, I put in horizontal lines as if the skull were resting on a blanket for added detail design. (Image taken with iPhone) COPYRIGHT Kay Smith

Aspen Winter

9x7 watercolor winter imaginary scene begun yesterday using Gansai Tambi graphite paints (Kuretake). This is in Master's Touch 80 lb paper sketchbook that is fun to paint on. Not used the graphite colors in awhile and interesting to see the pale green which they call yellow applied to the background. Negative painting of trees is in far background and I could keep going with them. Aspens are tall and stately holding their trunks and limbs high in this snowy landscape. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2025

American Saddlebred

10.5x9 watercolor on Saunders 140 lb cold press paper, American Journey paints. Size was 10.5x15, about 1/4 sheet, and I decided to crop off the right side as I'd blurred the rider and it didn't add anything to the composition...30 minutes to draw, 1.5 hours to paint. I used a black & white copy of the photo so color isn't too accurate but think it reads a sorrel anyway. This work is SOLD and was created in 2011. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith
