Woven Strawberry

15x11 watercolor of two exact paintings cut into strips; one, horizontally and the other vertically, then laced or woven together to make one image.  I've done several of these works and they're always fun.

Ruidoso Cosmos

5x7 watercolor on 140 lb hot press paper, a composition of several pink and white cosmos photos taken last weekend.  I found a large and lovely flowerbed at one of Ruidoso's lumberyard/hardware stores (Foxworth Galbraith) where lots of varieties were growing.

Indoor Cat

12x9 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper done recently of a mostly white cat with some black on its forehead, an imaginary scene of one kept inside, looking out and possibly wanting out.  With this cat pet portrait I've tried to show some emotion the cat may be experiencing.

Garden Gate Roses

24x18 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper block, an earlier work I took out and finished today adding touches needed for values and balance.  I love this combination of old heavy Gothic style ornamental gate paired with soft velvety roses.  A hint of blue sky is seen in the distance.

Turkey Buzzard

5.5x8.5 watercolor and ink (Micron 01 pen) on Masters sketchbook done this past weekend for another WetCanvas timed event that I finished well before the 2 hour time limit.  I tried to make this carnivorous/carrion eating bird look menacing.

Purple Orange Fantasy flower

10x10 alcohol inks on paper done last month, a rather abstract version of an imaginary bloom.  This one would look great in a very large print up on someone's wall.  Artspan does a fantastic job with their print services.

Barn Swallow

6x9 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper done last week of a single barn swallow (image courtesy Dave Slaughter/WetCanvas) I painted for one of that site's forum challenges.  The ref had multiple birds but I decided to feature only one and do it in a fairly loose manner of darks first, then midtone values, then lights.

Oh Deer!

15x22 walnut ink on Lana 140 lb hot press paper done a few days ago for another animal wildlife challenge online, courtesy Robert (WetCanvas).  This mule deer is looking over her habitat for a few good things to eat and was sketched with a wooden chopstick.  Her body was blended using a round #14 brush for smoother texture.

Sunflower Power

15x22 watercolor on Fabriano 140 lb hot press paper of a single sunflower drawn over a failed painting that was a neighbor in a purple suit.  As one of my contemporary reworked or recycled pieces this one was lots of fun to develop into warm and cool hues with an abstract background that might be leaves, stems and petals.

Pitbull Joyride

8.5x5.5 watercolor and ink in Masters sketchbook, drawn last night then painted today of an imaginary happy pitbull with his head out a car window, going for a sunny day drive.  Painting animals on joyrides is so much fun.

Elephant Eyes

24x18 watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper done with spicing up neutrals usually put into play for these type animals.  Eyes are a mix of black India ink.  One can feel the dust swirling around this massive beast. It was sketched and painted from an earlier drawing.  A WIP for this one can be seen on this blog 3-14-14.

Iglesia San Jose

11x15 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper painted today. I dressed it up the old church w/ Mexico's tradition of burning the bad. They make a list annually of the things they don't want in their lives anymore and on New Year's the list is burned so as to start fresh without anything in their way. What a good idea!

Chicken Ranch

15x22 watercolor collage on 140 lb Arches paper; chickens are collage cut from one failed painting on top of really bad old wooden shack painting to make a new scene. It is meant to be a humorous piece from two 'dogs'.  Moral of the story: Never throw away a bad painting. You can always recycle it or paint on the back side.

Klimt Kritters

4.25 x 6.25 done with Pigma Micron 01 pen on 140 lb watercolor paper in the Gustav Klimt genre.  A whimsical chicken and a border collie have nothing in common except Klimt!  I had first sketched this years ago then recently took it out and made value adjustments and color changes in this semi-abstract piece.

Stephie's White Poppy

9x12 watercolor done last week while on a short vacation.  Photo courtesy of my friend Stephie who put it in the reference image library on WetCanvas.  I really enjoy painting white subjects as it is a challenge to get values right.

Retro Rooster

10 x 14.75 mixed media (watercolor, acrylics, newspaper, napkins, catalog pages, ink) I composed over a failed geranium watercolor. The rooster head and neck were from a former failed barnyard painting with him and two hens that did not quite work. His purple legs just kill me; feathers in front are from newspaper photos of old wood.  It is a conglomeration of elements with a whole lot of country style and was fun to make.

Psycho Pig

7.5x11 mixed media on Arches 140 lb cold press paper.  Media used over a failed watercolor background are Derwent Inktense pencils, Caran D'Ache watersoluble wax crayons, black India ink, and Pigma Micron pen 01 (ink) to draw.  A fun pig and a little crazy, hence the title of this surreal sow.
